We are looking for a Senior Staff Engineer (L70) to join our Platform collective. This is a technical leadership role with companyâwide influence, working closely with crossâfunctional teams to improve Monzo's platform resilience and enable our engineering community to build reliable, performant systems.
Senior Staff Engineer Responsibilities
- Be handsâon and deeply technical with code and infrastructure, solving complex technical challenges.
- Partner with the Engineering Director for Platform and other ICs to provide technical leadership around resilience across Monzo.
- Build a deep understanding of the platform and strengthen the reliability surface between teams by enhancing tools, patterns and guardrails.
- Promote and maintain a culture where every engineer feels supported to design, build and operate reliable systems at global scale.
- Understand crossâteam work streams, regularly providing technical advice and challenging peers.
- Lead architectural discussions for the most complex systems, arriving at robust, optimal solutions given context.
- Champion high standards by celebrating success and providing constructive feedback.
- Foster a culture of quality, championing measures to test work and making quality tooling easy.
- Proâactively mentor, sponsor and upâlevel engineers.
What We're Looking For
- Solid software engineering foundations â robust backend services written in strongly typed languages.
- Handsâon experience with AWS, GCP and Kubernetes; deep experience designing and maintaining global, resilient cloud systems.
- Infrastructure as Code expertise (e.g., Terraform) and a mindset of solving problems through automation.
- System curiosity â a drive to investigate complex issues and understand how distributed applications fail and scale.
- Platform mindset â enthusiasm for building a platform that enables success for everyone at Monzo, focusing on reliability, performance and developer experience.
