This position offers an exciting opportunity to establish and lead the company\βs legal function, reporting directly to the Managing Director. The role involves advising on regulatory compliance, healthcare law, commercial contracts, corporate governance, and risk management. As the first in-house legal hire, you will shape the legal backbone of a pioneering medical cannabis business in the UK.
Role Responsibilities
- Build and lead the in-house legal team and risk framework.
- Advise the Board and executive team on legal, regulatory, and governance issues.
- Manage relationships with external legal counsel efficiently and cost-effectively.
- Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements, including service, supply, distribution, NDAs, and SaaS contracts.
- Support licensing and collaboration agreements within healthcare, pharma, or cannabis sectors.
- Provide guidance on compliance with UK medical cannabis regulations, controlled drugs legislation, MHRA, GPhC, and CQC standards.
- Assist pharmacy and clinic teams with regulatory matters and ensure compliance with advertising, GDPR, and clinical governance.
- Oversee governance of a multi-entity group, including shareholder agreements, board resolutions, and filings.
- Advise on structuring around IP, tax, and risk mitigation; support funding rounds, M&A, and international expansion.
- Lead GDPR and data privacy initiatives and manage company IP and licensing issues.
Candidate Requirements
- UK-qualified solicitor (5+ PQE preferred) with broad in-house experience.
- Experience in regulated sectors like healthcare, life sciences, pharma, cannabis, or tech.
- Hands-on, pragmatic approach with a business partner mindset.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Experience in startups or high-growth environments is desirable.
Additional Preferences
- Exposure to controlled drugs licensing, MHRA inspections, or clinical trials.
- Knowledge of cross-border legal issues.
- Previous experience as a sole legal counsel or first legal hire.
- Interest in healthcare innovation and patient advocacy.
