We are supporting a public sector client in hiring a Data Architect to join a data modernisation programme already underway. The programme is migrating an existing on-premises database environment to Azure, and these roles have arisen due to an urgent need to address data management challenges and improve data architecture across the organisation.
This is a senior architecture role requiring someone who can assess and document the existing data landscape, define the target state architecture and provide hands-on oversight across both on-premises and Azure environments. The successful candidate will work closely with Data Engineers and programme stakeholders to ensure the architectural design is sound, well documented and deliverable within the constraints of a mid-delivery programme.
This role suits an experienced Data Architect with a strong data modelling background, comfortable joining a programme in flight and providing both strategic architectural direction and practical delivery support. Candidates with experience across SQL Server, Azure SQL Database, Azure Data Factory and Databricks are particularly encouraged to apply.
Key Responsibilities- Assess and document existing business application databases and BI and data warehouse systems, producing clear architectural artefacts to support programme continuity and planning.
- Design and own data models including logical and physical models, ensuring they accurately reflect the existing and target state data landscape.
- Define the target state Azure data architecture, covering Azure SQL Database, Azure Data Factory, Databricks and associated components.
- Provide architectural oversight across on-premises SQL Server 2022 activity including staging, landing zone design and integration with existing Qlik and SSRS reporting environments.
- Produce TOAD Data Modeler data models or equivalent artefacts as required, ensuring data models are maintained and accessible across the programme team.
- Guide and support Data Engineers across pipeline development, data movement and transformation activity, ensuring engineering output aligns with the architectural design.
- Work within Azure DevOps for backlog management and CI/CD pipeline governance, maintaining Git-integrated version control across architectural artefacts.
- Engage with senior programme stakeholders to communicate architectural decisions, manage risks and dependencies and ensure alignment with wider programme objectives.
- Proven experience as a Data Architect or Senior Data Modeller across both on-premises and cloud data environments.
- Strong data modelling background including logical, physical and conceptual model design across complex, multi-system data landscapes.
- Hands-on experience with SQL Server 2022 or equivalent, including T-SQL and SSIS in staging and landing zone contexts.
- Proven experience designing and delivering Azure data architectures across Azure SQL Database and Azure Data Factory.
- Experience working within Azure DevOps including backlog management and CI/CD pipeline governance.
- Ability to produce clear, well-structured architectural documentation and data models for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Comfortable joining a mid-delivery programme, assessing existing work and providing architectural direction quickly.
- Familiarity with TOAD Data Modeler or equivalent data modelling tooling.
- Experience with Azure Databricks and Python Notebooks for advanced data processing and transformation.
- Familiarity with Qlik or SSRS reporting environments and the architectural considerations for supporting them during migration.
- Experience guiding and mentoring Data Engineers within a programme delivery context.
