Loughton runs longer than people who don't live there think. From the Roding Valley end down by the river to the High Beach edge of Epping Forest is the better part of three miles, and our IG10 round threads through most of it. If you've cleaned in this part of the Epping Forest district before, you'll already know that the housing isn't one thing.
We're hiring a part-time domestic cleaner in Loughton at £13–£15 per hour, paid weekly, on regular fortnightly visits across IG10.
That's the headline. Read on for what the work actually looks like.
The streets we work
Most of our Loughton rounds sit on four loose patches. There are the Edwardian villas off Alderton Hill and Smarts Lane backing onto the forest, the bigger detached homes that get carved into rooms or kept as one large family clean. There are the 1930s semis on the slopes between the High Road and Roding Valley station, where most of our regular maintenance work is. There's the band of mock-Tudor and inter-war housing nearer the High Beach edge, plus the modern flats clustered round the High Road and the Loughton Broadway parade. And there's a smaller patch around Debden, on the Debden Estate side of the tube station, where the work is mostly newer flats and shorter visits.
The Loughton Hall conservation area, the older end up by the parish church and Smarts Lane, is its own micro-pattern. Listed buildings, Grade II in places, owners who care about which products go on what surface. We don't bring bleach to those jobs unless asked.
The work mix is mostly maintenance cleans for working households on a fortnightly rota. A handful of end-of-tenancy slots booked through Lawlors and Spencer Munson, both of whom have offices on Loughton High Road. A small number of holiday-let turnarounds on the forest-edge roads where families let out a room or annexe for forest walkers in season.
Pay, in plain numbers
£13 to £15 an hour. Maintenance rounds sit at the lower end. End-of-tenancy and listed-building deep cleans go to the top of the range. We pay weekly, by bank transfer every Friday, for the previous Sunday-to-Saturday week. Mileage is 45p a mile between jobs in a day. We don't ask you to bring your own vacuum.
Weekly because monthly is annoying when you're new. We don't run a 28-day pay cycle for the same reason.
Who we want
You'll have cleaned before, properly. Either professionally for an agency or seriously domestically. We're not training from zero on this round.
- You drive, or you live somewhere on the Central line that gets you to Loughton, Debden or Buckhurst Hill without three changes. The first eastbound train into Loughton is just after 5am Monday to Friday, which matters if we put you on a Debden 7am start.
- You're around for at least three weekday mornings. We can usually fit a Saturday round if you want one, but we don't expect it.
- You text the night before if a job needs to move. The rota goes out Sunday evening for the week.
What we don't ask for: a CV on headed paper, a covering letter, references typed up. Plain text is fine.
Local stuff worth knowing
Parking on the High Road and the side streets behind it is mostly free for short stretches but with a clatter of single-yellow restrictions and the council's been tightening enforcement around the station. Clients pay any visitor permit costs. The forest-edge roads, Alderton Hill and the streets the other side of Algers Road, are easier on parking but tighter on width — a small car beats a big one for those.
If you don't drive, the Central line is the spine. Loughton, Debden and Buckhurst Hill are all in zone 6, with Roding Valley a short detour on the Hainault loop. The 167 and the 397 buses pick up most of the gaps between station and street. Epping Forest is the practical landmark for half our jobs. Clients give directions like "third left after the cricket club" or "opposite the King's Oak side of the forest" rather than by postcode.
The competition matters too. Maid In Essex and Mel's Cleaning both run domestic rounds across Loughton at slightly different price points. We sit between them, and we keep the same cleaner on the same job for as long as it's working. Low turnover is the point.
