Who we are
About Stripe
Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies - from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups - use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone's reach while doing the most important work of your career.
Our Editorial Team
Stripe’s Editorial team is premised on two notions: that ideas are essential ingredients in fueling economic progress; and that many of the best ideas are undervalued. Works in Progress, our magazine of underrated schemes to improve the world, recently branched out into print subscriptions. Stripe Press, our in-house imprint canonizes ideas for Progress—new and old—in beautiful editions. The team recently celebrated one million books sold.
One consequence of building infrastructure at Stripe’s scale is that we see the economy forming in real time. New categories appear before they have names. New business models take shape quietly, then suddenly feel inevitable. Patterns emerge in how people build, sell, hire, and get paid. These signals matter — and sharing them helps policymakers, business leaders, media and the public better understand where the economy is headed.
What you’ll do
We are looking for an entrepreneurial, analytical, curious data writer and editor to join Stripe’s editorial team. In this role, you will partner closely with Stripe’s chief economist to explore datasets that cover millions of companies and trillions of dollars of transactions, and uncover macroeconomic trends, industry shifts, and pockets of innovation. You’ll turn them into enthralling writing for internet audiences including startup founders, other business leaders, policymakers, and media. You’ll distribute your stories across lots of channels, including new ones you’ll run (e.g. Substack), traditional media, social media (you’ll probably tweet a lot yourself), and keynotes delivered by our founders. You’ll use LLMs and other AI tools to rapidly prototype analysis, writing, and visuals.
Responsibilities
- Work with Stripe’s data science team to find and interpret signals in Stripe’s data that illuminate emerging trends, new categories, and structural shifts in the global economy.
- Scour publicly available macroeconomic data to weave into stories about trends we’re seeing on Stripe.
- Own data stories end-to-end — from forming the hypothesis, to exploring and analyzing data, to shaping the narrative, visualization, and final content, all partnering closely with our head of economic research.
- Turn complex datasets into clear, elegant visualizations that make ideas legible and persuasive.
- Publish original data-driven editorial, and help ensure the strongest ideas travel — through social, press, partnerships, and speaking platforms.
- Run Stripe Economics, and launch other new editorial channels (e.g. Substack, Twitter) to disseminate data stories and build online communities around them.
- Work closely with the Economics, Data Science, and Policy teams at Stripe to refine questions, validate findings, and uphold a high bar for rigor.
- Collaborate with external researchers, academics, and journalists to extend the reach and impact of Stripe’s economic insights.
Who You Are
You’re highly entrepreneurial, enjoying devising and launching new ideas, and relentlessly improving what we already do. You have a knack for turning raw data into a clear insight, a memorable chart, and a story people want to read. You bring taste, curiosity, and a strong editorial point of view, alongside the technical ability to work with data. You have a journalist’s instincts — drawn to early signals, skeptical of easy narratives, and motivated by explaining not just what is happening, but why it matters. You care about craft, write well, and enjoy working across disciplines to turn complex systems into clear, rigorous stories.
Minimum requirements
- Experience working with large datasets and producing accurate, public-facing analysis.
- 5 years of experience publishing original work (e.g. running a Substack/newsletter, or writing within a newsroom or media organization).
- Exceptional writer across short and long formats.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with data science tools e.g. R, python, or equivalent.
- A strong and proven editorial point of view.
- Experience in a fast-paced newsroom or editorial environment.
- Deeply engaged with online discourse, with an established presence on social media or track record of building an audience for your writing.
- Experience creating data visualizations for publication.
- A track record of developing new and creative content formats.
- Experience leading projects and partnering closely with cross-functional teams.
