General Summary

This position reports to the Team Leader-Tyre Science or their designee; is located in Banbury, UK. The role involves the design, development and application of advanced simulation tools, with a strong focus on tyres, as well as any related tools used in the continuous improvement of the car performance. From time to time, this position may require providing track support during races and/or test events by following the sessions live from the factory.

General Responsibilities

Promote teamwork and effective communications to develop working relationships between all personnel and departments.

Follow all safety regulations in all venues.

Assumes any responsibilities and duties delegated by the Team Leader- Tyre Science or their designee.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and mentor junior and intern engineers in their contribution to team activities.
  • Design, develop and continually assess the correlation of both physical and empirical tyre models whilst conducting research to seek improvements on the modelling techniques.
  • Support the Design Office and other departments in the design of cars and tools with simulations and data driven approaches.
  • Design, development, and correlation of tools aimed at analyzing tyre performance on track, on the rigs and when used on simulation tools (i.e. lap sim, DIL, HIL, etc.).
  • Design and develop the necessary infrastructure for fitting physical and empirical tyre models to track and/or rig data.
  • Help maintain tyre catalogues to provide a comprehensive set of parameters and populate all simulation and analysis tools with the most precise and up-to-date information.
  • Support Electronics and Control Systems departments in detecting and reporting sensors malfunctions. Propose solutions and/or support the investigation using a data driven approach.
  • Contribute to pre-and post-event simulations and reporting to support Race Engineering with event preparation with a focus on improving tyre performance and the tools involved.
  • Propose and, from time-to-time, support tyre testing activities, for all trackside and R&D testing opportunities, and report the findings using a data driven approach.
  • Support project management through the definition of objectives, test plans, data post-processing, analysis, and reporting.

Education And Work Experience

  • Minimum BSc in any STEM subject, with robust knowledge and experience in applied mathematics or engineering. A Master’s degree or PhD is preferred.
  • At least five years of experience, in either motor racing or in a Vehicle Dynamics or Performance role within mainstream automotive engineering is strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience in Formula One would be beneficial.

Specialized Knowledge And Skills

  • Strong communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Have an advanced understanding of tyres modeling and engineering.
  • Good knowledge of all onboard sensors and instrumentations generally used to monitor tyres’ performance and operating conditions.
  • Strong technical background in racing cars.
  • Work to a consistently high standard in stressful and time sensitive situations.
  • Quick decision-making skills whilst working through problems in a scientific and analytical way.
  • Work well within a team environment with personnel at all levels.
  • A sympathetic approach to your work colleagues and an ability to integrate within a group environment.

Equipment And Applications

  • Good to advanced experience and knowledge of MATLAB & Simulink and C#.
  • Good experience with object-oriented coding (preferably in C# or C++).
  • Experience with any symbolic and acausal modelling language (such as Modelica, SimScape or other multi-body/physical modelling software tools) would be favorable.
  • Good to advanced knowledge of MAT products to enable management application in vTAG environment like System Monitor and GDE libraries.
  • Solid computer knowledge, proficient with Microsoft Office.

Work Environment Physical Demands

An ability to work and prioritize within a high pressure, time sensitive environment while retaining a methodical approach is essential. The role may require some domestic and international travel and a willingness to work long and flexible hours including weekends.

This position may require lifting to 50 pounds, repeated bending, squatting and manual dexterity. Fast-paced work environment requiring heavy mental demands. Work environment includes machinery, race cars, 7-post and other rigs, grinding debris, and hazardous fluids. All employees must ensure compliance with the Company Health and Safety Policy, and all relevant other statutory Health and Safety legislation.
