Join a high-impact engineering team building the systems that power trading, risk and analytics at a fast-growing, tech-driven fund. You’ll work close to the action with quants and traders, helping to rebuild critical platforms away from legacy constraints and into a modern, cloud-native stack.

About the team

This tech team develops and enhances systems used across the front-office trading, operations and finance functions. You’ll work side-by-side with Strats (quant analysts), traders, operations and finance to design, build and support the applications that keep the business running smoothly. Led by a highly technical leadership team with top-tier trading and market-making backgrounds, the group sets a high engineering bar but offers strong collaboration, learning and ownership. There is also a dedicated internal “quest”-style engineering group focused on continuously improving core infrastructure, tooling and developer experience, so you’ll be part of an environment that takes engineering quality seriously.

What you’ll do

  • You’ll work on a mix of greenfield and existing systems, with scope aligned to your level:
  • Enhance and support business-critical applications across the firm, including:
    • Feed processing systems
    • Trade processing and booking
    • Graphical user interfaces used by traders and operations
    • Workflow and automation tools
    • Finance and risk reporting systems
  • Design, develop and deploy new applications and integrations using Python and related technologies in a hybrid cloud environment (AWS/Azure).
  • Build and integrate services with external platforms and key origination/servicing systems.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Pricing, Trading and Finance to gather requirements and deliver robust, well-tested features.

At junior–mid level (c. 3+ years):

  • Take ownership of well-defined components and features.
  • Work closely with senior engineers for design reviews, mentorship and best-practice guidance.
  • Grow your exposure to system design, cloud-native patterns and production support.

At senior level:

  • Lead design and implementation of larger features and services, from requirements through to production.
  • Influence architecture decisions as systems are migrated off legacy platforms and rebuilt using modern tooling.
  • Help improve engineering practices (testing, CI/CD, observability, infra-as-code) and mentor less experienced developers.

Skills and experience

  • Required
    • 3+ years of application development experience, ideally within investment banking, insurance or another complex, data-heavy environment.
    • Strong Python programming experience.
    • Ability to work with multiple programming languages and technologies as needed.
    • Familiarity with the software development lifecycle, infrastructure-as-code concepts and modern development best practices.
    • Experience building or operating cloud-native systems (e.g. AWS).
    • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative, team-oriented mindset.
  • Desirable
    • Server-side web development experience (including modern web frameworks).
    • Familiarity with SQL Server and/or PostgreSQL.
    • Experience with React / JavaScript UI development.
    • Linux experience and comfort working in a command-line-driven environment.

Why this role

  • Work close to trading and quant teams, with your code directly impacting real-world decisions and risk.
  • Help drive a strategic migration away from legacy systems into a modern, cloud-native architecture using technologies like Kubernetes and infrastructure-as-code.
  • Join a high-quality engineering culture with strong technical leadership, clear impact, and opportunities to grow into broader ownership or leadership roles over time.
  • Inclusive, collaborative environment that values different perspectives and actively encourages applications from under-represented groups in technology.

How to prepare for a job interview at Mondrian Alpha

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If Mondrian Alpha uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

Showcase Your Projects

Bring along a portfolio that highlights our best work. This could be code samples, GitHub repositories, or any side projects we’ve built. Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
