  • Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) status or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification (minimum)
  • Level 3 qualification in Childcare or Education
  • A relevant degree in Education, Psychology, SEN, Child Development or similar

About the Role – Specialist SEN HLTA

We are working with a well‑established and highly supportive specialist SEN school in the Halesowen area. The school supports pupils aged 4-16 with a range of additional needs, including:

  • Autism and communication needs
  • Moderate learning difficulties (MLD)
  • Speech, language and social interaction needs
  • Sensory processing difficulties
  • Additional and complex learning needs

The school is known for its nurturing ethos, structured routines, communication‑focused practice and strong teamwork. As a SEN HLTA, you will play a key role in supporting learning, leading interventions and providing continuity across the classroom, working closely with teachers and the wider SEN team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead learning activities and interventions across the classroom under the direction of the teacher
  • Deliver planned lessons, small‑group sessions and targeted interventions, adapting activities to meet diverse SEN needs
  • Provide specialist support for pupils with autism, MLD, sensory and communication needs
  • Support, implement and review EHCP targets and personalised learning plans
  • Model effective SEN strategies for Teaching Assistants and support staff
  • Support pupils with emotional regulation, engagement and positive behaviour strategies
  • Use visual supports, communication tools and structured routines consistently
  • Deliver 1:1 and small‑group support where required
  • Support personal care and medical routines when required (training provided)
  • Work closely with class teachers, SENCOs, therapists and pastoral staff
  • Contribute to planning, assessment, recording progress and feedback
  • Help maintain a safe, inclusive and engaging learning environment

What We’re Looking For

  • HLTA status or a Level 3 TA / childcare / education qualification or relevant degree (essential)
  • Proven experience supporting children or young people with SEN
  • Confidence leading learning activities and covering lessons where required
  • Strong understanding of autism, sensory needs and communication strategies
  • Ability to mentor or support less‑experienced support staff
  • Calm, patient and resilient approach
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Experience with PECS, Makaton or alternative communication methods (highly desirable)
