Our client is seeking a Team Leader to manage a team of Credit Underwriters in their affordability department. The team will be responsible for assessing retail credit applications supported by creditworthiness and affordability data to determine lending decisions, ensuring credit is affordable and results in good customer outcomes.
Successful candidates will be working with a high level of accuracy to prescribed processes and strict deadlines as part of a high-quality team.
Responsibilities:
- Provide day-to-day guidance, support, and oversight to team members to ensure high performance and adherence to quality standards
- Manage a team of credit professionals responsible for assessing customer data including credit reports, open banking reports, payslips, and bank statements
- Oversee the team’s analysis of income, expenditure, and financial vulnerabilities to ensure accurate and fair lending decisions
- Ensure team adherence to internal income and expenditure models, guiding appropriate escalation of cases to senior underwriters
- Drive operational excellence by maintaining high standards in documentation review, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with company policies and regulatory standards
- Act as the escalation point for complex or sensitive internal and external queries, ensuring issues are resolved effectively and efficiently
Essential skills & experience required:
- Previous team management experience within a financial services based credit or lending environment is essential
- Excellent working knowledge of retail finance underwriting
- A strong understanding of UK regulation, credit risk principles and risk assessment considerations
- Working knowledge of consumer lending environments and CONC 5 is highly desirable
- Strong analytical and decision-making abilities, with the capability to manage complex or high-risk cases
- Confident communicator, both written and verbal, with the ability to influence and collaborate across departments
- A team player who can collaborate with team members and wider colleagues across the business
