We are looking for an experienced Automation & Controls Engineer to join a dynamic engineering team in a fast-paced manufacturing environment based in Derby!

We seek candidates with a proven background in designing, programming, and supporting control systems for machinery, including PLCs and HMIs. This is a hands-on technical role where you will be involved in developing, commissioning, and improving automation systems. This is a Full-Time, Permanent position offering excellent career growth opportunities!

What you’ll be doing:

  • Design, develop, and program PLC and HMI control systems (Allen-Bradley, Rockwell, Siemens, Mitsubishi)
  • Implement control systems software and associated automation equipment
  • Support existing machines and legacy control systems, including upgrades and integration
  • Develop detailed design documentation, including FDS, software specifications, and user manuals
  • Carry out Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), and on-site commissioning
  • Work closely with production, engineering, and sales teams to meet project requirements
  • Some travel nationally and potentially internationally as required
  • Promote teamwork, continuous improvement, and high standards of Health & Safety

Hours:

Flexible day shifts (38 hours per week, Monday-Friday)

Monday-Thursday: choice of 7am-3:30pm / 7:30am-4pm / 8am-4:30pm / 8:30am-5pm

Friday: choice of 7am-1pm / 7:30am-1:30pm / 8am-2pm / 8:30am-2:30pm (early finish!)

Pay:

£45,000 - £55,000 per annum (Depending on Experience)

Skills/Experience Required:

  • HNC, HND, or degree-level education in a relevant engineering discipline
  • Minimum 3 years experience programming Allen-Bradley PLCs
  • Hands-on experience with PLCs, HMIs, and motion/servo control systems
  • Experience in packaging equipment, special-purpose machinery, or automation environments
  • Strong documentation skills, including creating FDS, software design specs, and commissioning reports
  • Excellent organisation, time management, and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a flexible can-do attitude
