Become our Junior / Trainee Buyer

Chesterfield, Derbyshire | Salary dependent on experience

Build your career with Modular500

At Modular500, we design, manufacture, move and install buildings across the UK. From our Chesterfield production facility, our teams work together to take projects from initial requirements through to delivery.

Getting the right materials to the right place, at the right time, is central to that work. We’re looking for a Junior / Trainee Buyer to help make it happen.

If you’re organised, curious and ready to learn, this is an opportunity to develop your skills, take on responsibility and build a career in procurement.

The opportunity & role

Working closely with our Head of Commercial, you’ll support purchasing and materials control across multiple live projects. You’ll learn how materials are specified, ordered, delivered, checked and recorded, and see how your work supports production every day.

You don’t need previous buying experience. We’ll provide structured training, support from experienced colleagues and external courses where helpful.

Based at our Chesterfield production facility, you’ll work alongside commercial, production, logistics, compliance, estimating and finance.

Your responsibilities

Buying & procurement

  • Help turn project requirements into accurate purchase orders.
  • Check material specifications, quantities and required delivery dates.
  • Monitor lead times and flag potential issues early.
  • Support estimating and commercial colleagues as projects move from tender into delivery.
  • Keep purchasing information current so production can plan effectively.

Senior colleagues will prepare bills of materials. You’ll learn how these translate into purchasing requirements as your knowledge develops.

Supplier relationships

  • Maintain approved supplier records and support day-to-day supplier communication.
  • Obtain quotes and check prices against agreed rates.
  • Help resolve pricing discrepancies with support from senior colleagues.
  • Update pricing schedules and contribute to supplier reviews covering cost, quality and delivery.

Deliveries & quality

  • Track materials from order and confirmation through to delivery and checking.
  • Coordinate with logistics and production to help avoid congestion and delays.
  • Communicate changes to delivery dates so teams can respond early.
  • Support checks on incoming materials, record quality issues and help arrange credits, replacements or returns.

Stock & information

  • Maintain accurate stock records and help monitor minimum and maximum levels.
  • Identify shortages and support replenishment of regularly used materials.
  • Assist with stock checks and investigate discrepancies.
  • Keep records of costs, orders, delivery dates, outstanding items and stock allocated to projects.

You’ll receive training in our internal systems, Excel and procurement processes.

Your knowledge, skills & approach

You may already have experience in purchasing, stock control or administration. You may be looking for your first opportunity to develop a career in procurement.

What matters is how you approach the role.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Is organised and pays attention to the detail.
  • Communicates clearly and confidently with suppliers and colleagues.
  • Is comfortable using systems and Excel, or keen to learn.
  • Takes initiative and raises issues early.
  • Wants to understand how materials move through a manufacturing environment.
  • Enjoys working with others and seeing the practical impact of their work.

An interest in construction, manufacturing or engineering would be helpful. An understanding of drawings would also be a bonus. Neither is essential.

Your development

We want you to grow with us. You’ll benefit from:

  • On-the-job training from our Head of Commercial.
  • Opportunities to shadow experienced colleagues in procurement, supplier management and stock control.
  • Business-funded external courses in areas such as procurement, Excel and materials management.
  • A clear route towards a Buyer role as your skills and capability develop.

As you progress, you’ll have the opportunity to take on greater responsibility.

Why Modular500?

Our work brings design, manufacturing and delivery together. You’ll be close to production, understand how our buildings are made and see how good procurement keeps projects moving.

As we grow, we’re investing in stronger systems, better information and effective materials control. You’ll play a part in that progress while building your own experience.

Right material. Right quality. Right price. Right place. Right time.

An important job — and a great place to learn.
