We are seeking an Undergraduate Placement – Mechanical Design & Sustainability Engineer to join our multidisciplinary team at Modine / Airedale. In this role you will work on new product design projects from concept through launch, supporting the Lead Mechanical Engineer and contributing to our sustainability goals. Your responsibilities include creating design briefs, performance predictions, cost target achievement, and delivering projects within schedule. You will also identify sustainability risks, perform embodied carbon calculations, develop Environmental Product Declarations, and support our path to net‑zero carbon emissions.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform engineering calculations, including performance predictions and acoustic analysis.
- Select and specify critical components to meet project requirements.
- Develop 3D models, layout drawings and schematics.
- Structure Bills of Material.
- Implement component upgrades on existing standard product ranges.
- Meet deadlines and cost targets.
- Calculate embodied carbon and complete product lifecycle carbon assessments.
- Prepare Environmental Product Declarations.
- Coordinate with multiple business functions to advance sustainability objectives.
Required Education & Qualifications
- On track to achieving a First or Second class degree in Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related disciplines (e.g., Automotive, Aerospace, Energy).
- Strong theoretical and practical understanding of mechanical engineering principles, especially thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and refrigeration.
- Solid grasp of manufacturing engineering concepts.
- Ability to produce clear, comprehensive technical reports.
- Interest in sustainability, low‑carbon design and environmental performance.
- Enthusiastic, curious, and eager to contribute to product development and sustainability initiatives.
- Effective communication skills at all levels, proactively gathering information from colleagues and suppliers.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, with VBA experience desirable).
- Professional attitude, representing both Airedale and the wider department.
Desirable experience:
- 3D CAD modelling (Solid Edge, SolidWorks, or similar), 2D drafting (AutoCAD), ERP systems (SAP).
- Experience with sustainability assessment tools is a plus.
