Joining Moderna offers the unique opportunity to be part of a pioneering team that is revolutionising medicine through mRNA technology, with a diverse pipeline of development programmes across various diseases. As an employee, you will be part of a continually growing organisation, working alongside exceptional colleagues and strategic partners worldwide, contributing to global health initiatives.
Moderna's commitment to advancing the technological frontier of mRNA medicines ensures a challenging and rewarding career experience, with the potential to make a significant impact on patients' lives worldwide. Moderna is solidifying its presence in Harwell, a global hub for scientific research and innovation. Our Harwell site focuses on establishing a leading-edge research, development, and manufacturing facility in the UK. We are seeking experts who are ready to shape the future of biotechnology and healthcare innovation by joining our mission to deliver the greatest possible impact to people through mRNA medicines.
This is a critical, high-impact role for a seasoned SAP Global Trade Services (GTS) expert looking to lead a global digital capability from Moderna’s Harwell site in the UK. As the single point of accountability for Moderna’s SAP GTS (E4H) landscape, you will architect and drive a future-ready, scalable system enabling over €3 billion in annual global shipments. The Senior SAP GTS Solution Architect will act as the central digital leader for Trade & Compliance, partnering cross-functionally with global stakeholders in Commercial, Supply Chain, Logistics, Procurement, and Finance. You will own the system roadmap and strategy, manage integrations across core business platforms, and deploy GTS capabilities that uphold compliance, automation, and operational excellence across Moderna’s expanding global footprint.
This is a sole contributor position, delivering both strategic direction and hands-on execution while operating in an Agile environment with continuous delivery expectations. You will have a unique opportunity to influence enterprise-wide compliance infrastructure, interface with cutting-edge generative AI opportunities, and modernise global trade solutions through the SAP ecosystem.
Here’s What You’ll Do
- Act as system owner for SAP GTS E4H, driving architecture, configuration, validation, and 24×7 operational performance.
- Plan and lead SAP GTS E4H upgrades in collaboration with Basis, Security, and functional teams, ensuring seamless execution and post-go-live stabilization.
- Design and deliver key GTS capabilities including sanctioned-party screening, license management, customs management, trade preference, AES, Intrastat, and e-invoicing.
- Lead integration of GTS with S/4 HANA (SD, MM, FI, MDG), Ariba, EWM, and external partners such as customs brokers, 3PL/4PL providers, and government portals.
- Own end-to-end API and IDoc integration strategy and execution through go-live.
- Conduct system assessments and lead fit-gap analysis to continually modernise trade and compliance capabilities.
Your responsibilities will also include:
- Develop and execute the digital roadmap for Global Trade & Compliance, incorporating automation, best practices, and emerging SAP innovations.
- Translate global regulatory changes into system/process updates to maintain Moderna’s compliance posture.
- Create SOPs, user training guides, and analytics dashboards to enable self-service and adoption across functions.
- Shape Agile epics and user stories, manage the product backlog, and facilitate delivery of shippable increments through biweekly sprints.
- Monitor and report KPIs and risk indicators to executive stakeholders to ensure transparency and accountability.
- Contribute to broader digital initiatives where GTS architecture intersects with Moderna’s generative AI and automation strategy.
The key Moderna Mindsets you’ll need to succeed in the role:
- We behave like owners. The solutions we’re building go beyond any job description. This role demands end-to-end ownership of GTS systems, where you are expected to operate with autonomy, make strategic decisions, and build solutions that outlast projects—impacting Moderna’s operations at scale.
- We digitise everywhere possible using the power of code to maximise our impact on patients. You’ll design digital solutions that enable automation, integration, and insight across global trade and compliance, directly influencing how fast and compliantly medicines reach patients.
Here’s What You’ll Need (Basic Qualifications)
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business, or related field.
- 7 + years hands-on SAP experience, including 5 + years focused on SAP GTS/E4H and global trade compliance.
- 3 + full-cycle SAP GTS or GTS E4H implementations AND at least one hands-on GTS E4H upgrade, with integration to S/4 HANA Order-to-Cash and Logistics Execution.
- Deep functional knowledge of SD/OTC, LE, and Trade Compliance processes and customising.
- Demonstrated ability to lead projects independently from requirements through go-live in global, multicultural settings.
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills; able to engage technical teams and business executives alike.
- Solid project-management foundation and experience with Agile or hybrid delivery models.
Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications)
- In-depth expertise across SAP GTS modules: Customs Management, Compliance Management, Risk Management, Legal Control & Embargo, Preference Processing, SPL Screening, and Intrastat/Electronic Compliance Reporting.
- Mastery of key configurations: export-license structures, document block analysis, technically incomplete checks, HTS/ECCN & trade-class data maintenance, SPL / embargo rules, preference determinations.
- Hands-on integration experience with customs brokers, freight forwarders, 3PLs, and government interfaces (EU EMCS, US AES, e-invoicing portals).
- Analytical mindset—comfortable building pivot-table dashboards or leveraging BI tools to surface trade-compliance KPIs and insights.
- SAP certification(s) in GTS, SD, or Project Management (e.g., PMP, Scrum Master).
- Experience delivering SAP projects in pharmaceutical, life-science, or other highly regulated industries.
- Proven ability to influence without authority, drive alignment across time zones, and thrive in fast-moving, ambiguous environments.
- A growth mindset aligned with Moderna’s values—Bold, Relentless, Curious, Collaborative—and a passion for shaping the future of global trade compliance.
