The Role
Joining Moderna means advancing mRNA science to transform medicine. In this pivotal engineering leadership role, you will shape the long‑term reliability, performance, and compliance of Moderna's R&D Clinical Laboratory facilities. You will be the technical authority for facility and utility operations, driving maintenance excellence, engineering innovation, and continuous improvement.
What You’ll Do
- Provide technical leadership and oversight of building infrastructure, utilities, and facility systems to ensure reliable delivery of services that meet operational requirements.
- Ensure all engineering systems and services remain compliant with environmental, health, safety, statutory, and GxP regulatory requirements.
- Manage the technical performance of engineering service partners by setting expectations, monitoring delivery, identifying capability gaps, supporting training, and driving continuous performance improvements.
- Lead the execution of maintenance and engineering activities across the site using a combination of internal teams and external service providers.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive maintenance strategy using maintenance excellence principles, including maintenance plans, critical spare parts strategies, and asset reliability improvements.
- Partner with Global Maintenance and Engineering teams to implement maintenance strategies and develop robust maintenance job plans for all applicable systems.
- Lead engineering and facility improvement initiatives while ensuring quality, safety, schedule, and budget objectives are consistently achieved.
- Support major engineering initiatives including site shutdowns, capital projects, and engineering business process improvements.
- Build strong relationships with facility stakeholders by maintaining clear communication, understanding operational needs, and identifying opportunities for improvement.
- Champion continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen facility performance and support Moderna's continued growth.
- Foster an inspection‑ready culture by ensuring compliance activities, documentation, and regulatory requirements are completed accurately and on time.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, or Civil) required; Master’s preferred.
- Minimum 8 years of Facilities and/or Engineering experience in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industries.
- GMP facility experience required.
- Excellent negotiation, interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) required.
- Technical writing skills required.
- Ability to investigate issues using a structured problem‑solving approach to determine root cause and develop effective corrective and preventive actions.
- Demonstrate strategic enterprise thinking and innovative ways to deliver results and build trust.
- Experience utilizing a CMMS for planning and execution of a maintenance program; Maximo‑specific experience preferred.
- Knowledge of Honeywell (Niagara) and Siemens (Desigo) systems preferred.
- Ability to interact well with other groups, take ownership, and follow through on assignments; drive results on multiple complex assignments with minimal direction.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, and ability to work with enterprise‑wide information systems for stakeholder management and communication.
