The Props Workshop is part of the Production Workshops Department at the National Theatre and makes props for the NT’s shows and events. This apprenticeship is designed to develop practical prop‑making skills to a high standard of expertise.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute towards the making of props for National Theatre shows in rehearsal and performance.
- Work primarily on furniture props, and develop supporting skills such as finishes, technical drawing, and general theatre practice.
- Under the direction of NT staff, make, repair and refurbish a wide range of furniture props, working from designs, drawings and models.
- Attend dress rehearsals of shows you have worked on.
- Work to agreed deadlines, consulting at all times with the Props Workshop Manager.
- Work on stage when required, installing and repairing props and set dressing.
- Participate in safety checks and weekly planning meetings.
- Maintain high standards of operations and good housekeeping in the workshop.
- Adhere to the company’s Health & Safety policy at all times.
- Complete any other reasonable duties as requested by the Props Workshop Manager or the Workforce Development Manager.
Apprenticeship Structure
- The apprenticeship is split between the National Theatre and Webs Training Ltd.
- At Webs Training Ltd: study a Level 2 Standard in General Furniture Manufacture in five 1‑week blocks. The NT will cover reasonable travel and accommodation costs for these periods.
- Produce a portfolio as part of the course, supported by the NT.
- Supported in passing functional skills in English or Maths if required.
- At the NT: receive support from a dedicated team, work under guidance of senior staff, and participate in weekly planning, safety checks and other training, including visits to other workplaces on placement.
By the End of the Apprenticeship You Will Have…
- Working knowledge of furniture making and carpentry skills.
- A broad range of complementary prop‑making skills.
- Understanding of theatre design, tools, hardware and equipment.
- Knowledge of materials and health & safety.
- Ability to interpret a design brief and help fulfil the vision of creative designers.
- Skills in bench/technical drawings and basic stagecraft, working in a performance‑based environment.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Suitable for study at Level 2; must not hold a degree, HND or postgraduate qualification in a creative field, nor experience of working backstage in professional theatre.
- Practical skills that can be applied to the apprenticeship.
- Enjoys working with hands, works well in a team and is committed to completing the apprenticeship.
- Interest in carpentry and problem‑solving is useful.
