About the job:
We’re looking for a driven Software Engineering Manager to lead and grow a high-performing engineering team delivering award-winning mkodo products, including our geolocation platform, GeoLocs. Reporting to the Head of Engineering, the Software Engineering Manager leads a high performing large team, or multiple smaller teams, of Software Engineers, Tech Leads, and Principal Engineers working with a combination of iOS, Swift, Android, Kotlin, React, Java and AWS.
Role focus: Delivery and People. You are not a hands-on developer role, but you will be accountable for delivering projects on time and on budget. You will have a large impact on the success of your team and the wider engineering community and organisation, and you should be comfortable with modern software delivery and management practices and have delivered large projects.
Leadership style: A people-first manager with empathetic, principle-centred leadership. You will evangelise engineering excellence with an automation-first approach, challenge engineers to perform at their best, and partner with HR to lead on engineering talent recruitment. You will act as hiring manager and hold the team to a high bar for engineering excellence.
This role ensures we deliver outstanding products to thousands of customers using our Apps. You will be accountable for managing performance across the engineering community, rewarding good performance and managing improvements where needed.

What you’ll be doing
- Accountable for teams delivering projects on-time and on-budget, with clear milestone dates and individual contributions.
- Identify and remove blockers to keep the team progressing toward milestones.
- Line manage a large team or multiple smaller teams of Software Engineers.
- Ensure the team focuses on high-value work.
- Communicate progress and achievements to all levels, including executives, with clear project updates.
- Strive to improve efficiency and sustainability of processes and reduce waste.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement using retrospective data, project metrics, bug escape metrics, and regular operational reviews to drive improvements in process, approaches and tooling.
- Collaborate with Head of Engineering to shape and roll out strategy that energises the team.
- Lead and direct Principal and Lead Software Engineers and Software Engineers, providing coaching and training to support growth and succession planning.
- Role model mkodo behaviours and values and hold others accountable for them.

- Experience leading a team to deliver large projects on time and on budget.
- Experience managing fixed-scope projects.
- Confident manager with coaching, mentoring and feedback ethos to build high-performing teams and manage relationships.
- Strong leadership, mentoring and interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate a team towards common goals.
- Critical thinking and analytical skills.
- Clear communicator who can inspire through multiple mediums and provide context and delivery against it.
- Experience managing software engineers across multiple projects, including complex problem solving, resource planning, adapting to change, risk management, and meeting tight deadlines.
- Experience in performance management and difficult conversations.
- Passion for people-first leadership and fostering a positive, inclusive, high-performing culture.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Excellent knowledge of software development techniques and methodologies across the SDLC; mobile development experience is a plus.
- Able to multitask and prioritise in pressurised situations.
- Experience in recruiting diverse candidates and building balanced teams of both technical and soft skills.
- Experience with mkodo tech stack (iOS, Swift, Android, Kotlin, React, Java, AWS) or strong technical background in a modern language.
- Business and industry acumen regarding mkodo, its offerings, products and customers.
- Experience in managing teams with offshore/nearshore providers and working within global organisations.
