Are you a design-focused Senior Mechanical Engineer looking to work on some of the UK's most technically challenging data centre and critical environment projects? Our client is a leading M&E contractor with an annual turnover of circa £90 million, delivering high-profile commercial fit-out, data centre refurbishment, and critical infrastructure upgrade projects across the UK. Due to continued growth and a significant pipeline of secured work, they are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join their expanding engineering team.

The Role

Working as part of a highly skilled technical team, you will take ownership of mechanical design activities from initial concept through to detailed design, commissioning, and project delivery. This role offers a unique opportunity to work on complex refurbishment and upgrade projects within live critical environments, including data centres and mission-critical facilities. You will play a key role in ensuring technical excellence throughout the project lifecycle while providing engineering support across the wider business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the assessment of new project opportunities and preparation of fee submissions.
  • Develop and produce all necessary mechanical calculations and design solutions from concept and briefing stage through to detailed design.
  • Produce and review technical documentation, specifications, drawings, and reports.
  • Ensure designs comply with current regulations, industry standards, and client requirements.
  • Monitor and support construction activities on site, ensuring compliance with design intent and the high-quality standards expected by the business.
  • Lead and manage critical testing and commissioning activities, including:
    • Integrated Systems Testing (IST)
    • Black Building Testing
    • Mechanical commissioning and performance validation
  • Provide technical guidance and support to project teams, site teams, and wider business stakeholders.
  • Collaborate closely with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and internal teams throughout project delivery.

About You

  • Degree qualified or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience within mechanical building services design.
  • Strong understanding of HVAC and mechanical systems within critical environments.
  • Experience delivering projects within data centres, critical infrastructure, commercial fit-out, or similar technically demanding sectors.
  • Competent in mechanical calculations and industry-standard design software.
  • Knowledge of current British Standards, Building Regulations, CIBSE guidance, and industry best practices.
  • Experience supporting testing and commissioning activities within mission-critical facilities would be advantageous.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment.
