The Opportunity

I am working with a well‑established small construction company specialising in refurbishment and improvement works across the education, social housing, and commercial sectors. Due to continued growth, we are looking to appoint an Estimator to support our pre‑construction and tendering activities. This is an excellent opportunity for an Estimator who enjoys working in a close‑knit team, has strong attention to detail, and is comfortable pricing a wide variety of refurbishment schemes using Excel‑based systems.

The Role

As Estimator, you will be responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for refurbishment projects ranging from small works through to contracts valued up to £1m. You will work closely with the directors, site teams, and supply chain, playing a key role in securing new work and supporting project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed cost estimates and tender submissions for refurbishment projects
  • Take‑off quantities from drawings and specifications
  • Build and manage estimates using Excel‑based pricing systems
  • Obtain and analyse subcontractor and supplier quotations
  • Review tender documents, identify risks, and propose value‑engineering options
  • Attend pre‑tender meetings and site visits where required
  • Support bid submissions, including pricing schedules and clarifications
  • Assist with post‑tender queries and handover to delivery teams
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of materials, labour rates, and market conditions

About You

  • Proven experience as an Estimator within construction or refurbishment
  • Experience pricing education, social housing, or commercial projects preferred
  • Comfortable working on multiple tenders simultaneously
  • Strong Excel skills essential
  • Good understanding of building regulations and refurbishment methodologies
  • Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills
  • Able to work independently within a small business environment
  • Strong communication skills when dealing with clients, subcontractors, and colleagues
