DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The MJ Quinn Technology Services Department supports circa 5000 users across our platforms, workforce, and locations. The Department designs and supports a complex environment of software solutions.

JOB OBJECTIVE

The primary purpose of this role is to deliver new or improved business processes and software solutions that align with the organisation’s strategic goals. In practice, this means analysing current business processes and IT systems, identifying inefficiencies or opportunities for improvement, and defining requirements for changes or innovative solutions. By working closely with business sponsors (the key stakeholders funding or championing projects) and technology teams, the Business Analyst ensures that initiatives add significant business value — for example, by enhancing efficiency, improving service quality, or enabling better decision-making through data and systems. The Business Analyst also works within Agile project delivery frameworks and adheres to ITIL-based service management practices to ensure that process improvements are implemented effectively and sustainably.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Requirements Elicitation & Analysis: Working with business sponsors and users to gather, clarify, and document business and system requirements for new processes or software features. This involves conducting interviews, workshops, and data analysis to understand business problems, identify specific business needs, and define the scope of solutions.
  • Process Mapping & Improvement: Analysing current business workflows and business processes to pinpoint inefficiencies or pain points, then proposing improvements or automation opportunities. The BA may create process flow diagrams and business process models to visualize current vs. target state processes and recommend optimisations aligned with ITIL service improvement.
  • Solution Definition & Documentation: Translating business needs into clear, actionable requirements for the technical teams. This can include writing business requirements documents (BRDs), functional specifications, user stories, and use cases (for Agile projects).
  • Agile Collaboration: Playing an active role in the Agile development lifecycle (e.g. Scrum or Kanban processes). The Business Analyst typically works with Product Owners and development teams to refine the product backlog, elaborate on acceptance criteria for user stories, and ensure that the delivered software features meet the business requirements.
  • Testing & Validation: Collaborating with QA/Test teams and end-users to validate that solutions meet requirements and business objectives. The BA may help develop or review user acceptance test (UAT) scenarios and ensure traceability from requirements through to test cases.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Serving as the liaison between business sponsors and technical teams, keeping everyone aligned. This involves regular updates to business sponsors on project status, risks, and benefits, as well as negotiating priorities among different stakeholders.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • Analytical Skills & Process Understanding: Ability to analyse complex business processes and data to identify issues, trends, and opportunities.
  • Communication & Stakeholder Management: Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential. The BA must be able to communicate complex ideas in simple terms, whether drafting technical documentation or discussing changes with non-technical business stakeholders.
  • Agile and ITIL Knowledge: Practical experience working in an Agile development environment is an advantage.
