A key operational role for an experienced supervisor who can organise a team, maintain standards and drive improvements.
About the Role
We’re looking for a proactive Yard Supervisor to lead our Yard team and maintain high operational standards.
You’ll be responsible for the day to day running of the Yard, working alongside the Yard Operatives to ensure work is properly organised and completed safely, efficiently and to the required standard.
This is a hands on role combining team supervision, stock control and goods handling. You’ll need to recognise priorities, organise the available resources and ensure work is followed through to completion.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Lead and coordinate the day to day activities of the Yard Operatives.
- Plan and allocate work, monitor progress and ensure tasks are completed to the required standard.
- Work closely with the Stores, Sales and Workshop teams to support customer and internal requirements.
- Ensure Yard products are correctly identified, rotated and stored safely in their designated locations.
- Carry out regular stock checks to maintain accurate physical stock levels.
- Record stock movements, issues and discrepancies accurately and share the relevant information with the Stores team.
- Receive, unload and check incoming deliveries against purchase orders and supplier delivery notes.
- Investigate delivery discrepancies before receipts are finalised within the business system.
- Coordinate the safe picking, packing, preparation, loading and unloading of goods for deliveries, customer collections and MJ Abbott contracts.
- Ensure all stock movements and materials issued from the Yard are supported by the correct paperwork.
- Maintain a clean, safe and well organised Yard, ensuring company procedures are followed and improvements to stock control and operational efficiency are implemented.
- Provide support across the Stores and Yard teams and make occasional deliveries when required.
What We’re Looking For
Previous experience supervising or managing a small operational team.
The ideal person will be:
- Willing to work alongside the team and lead by example.
- Proactive, self motivated and able to work without continual direction.
- Confident allocating work, setting expectations and maintaining standards.
- A capable problem solver who takes ownership and follows issues through to completion.
- Organised and able to prioritise changing customer, delivery and stock requirements.
- Accurate and attentive when checking deliveries and maintaining stock records.
- Comfortable using, or learning to use, computerised stock control and business systems.
- A clear communicator who works well with colleagues across different departments.
- Safety conscious, with a strong awareness of safe working practices in a busy operational environment.
- Hold a full UK driving licence.
Experience
Experience within a yard, warehouse, stores, builders’ merchant, distribution or similar operational environment would be advantageous.
Experience in stock control, goods in processes and vehicle loading and unloading would be beneficial, as would a current forklift licence or other relevant materials handling certification.
Training & Development
We’ll provide support to help you develop your knowledge of our products, stock procedures and business system, along with in house forklift training if required. As your knowledge and experience develop, there will be opportunities to take on additional stock control and administrative responsibilities.
Why Join Us
You’ll be joining an experienced team in a role where your organisation, leadership and initiative will directly influence stock accuracy, customer service and the performance of the Yard. This is an opportunity to take responsibility for an important operational area and develop your role over time.
Working Hours:
- 7.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Monday to Friday, with half an hour off for lunch.
