Purpose & Scope of the Role

As a Senior or Principal Flood Risk Consultant, you will lead and support the delivery of flood risk and drainage projects across a diverse portfolio of schemes in both the public and private sectors. Working on projects ranging from small‑scale developments to major infrastructure programmes, you will be responsible for flood risk assessments, drainage strategies, modelling and environmental water studies to support planning applications. The role spans the full project lifecycle, from defining client briefs through to delivery and close‑out, with opportunities to take on project management responsibilities and contribute to business development.

You will play a key role in shaping development outcomes by delivering robust, policy‑compliant and sustainable flood risk solutions. Your expertise will support clients in navigating the planning process while ensuring environmental and regulatory requirements are met. Through technical leadership and mentoring, you will strengthen team capability and contribute to high‑quality project delivery across the UK.

Core Capabilities

  • Technical Expertise – Strong experience in flood risk assessments, drainage strategies and SuDS design; Knowledge of UK policy and guidance including NPPF, SPP, TAN15 and the SuDS Manual
  • Modelling & Digital Skills – Proficient in tools such as MicroDrainage/InfoDrainage, ArcGIS and AutoCAD; Ability to deliver robust modelling and technical analysis
  • Project Delivery & Management – Experience managing projects or supporting delivery from inception to completion; Ability to manage time, cost and quality while supporting change control
  • Stakeholder Engagement & Communication – Confident liaising with clients, regulators and stakeholders (e.g. EA, LLFA, water companies); Strong report writing and presentation skills
  • Leadership & Professional Development – Experience mentoring junior staff and contributing to team development; Committed to CPD and progressing towards or holding chartership

Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Degree in a relevant discipline with significant experience in flood risk and drainage consultancy. Chartered status (or working towards) with ICE or CIWEM is desirable. Experience supporting planning applications and UK‑based projects is essential. Full UK driving licence required; eligibility for SC clearance preferred.

Working Environment

This role can be based in London, Manchester, Leeds, Bristol or Newcastle, with flexible hybrid working available. You can work from home as needed to support project delivery, alongside office collaboration, site visits and occasional UK travel. Flexible working patterns are supported.
