OVERVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT/SECTION: MUFG (Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group) is one of the world's leading financial groups. The Compliance department, covering both Financial Crime and Core Compliance activities, within MUFG works to ensure that our organization conducts its business such that we protect our reputation, our business, and our clients within the regulatory and legal framework. It is responsible for the establishment and maintenance of effective systems and controls to protect clients’ assets and to mitigate the risk that MUFG might be used for further financial crime.
NUMBER OF DIRECT REPORTS: 6 (minimum)
MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE: Reporting to the Head of FCOE Operations the role holder will adopt/develop and implement data governance strategy, frameworks, policies and standards to ensure a high level of data quality, with specific focus on financial crime and core compliance risks. This leadership role involves managing data-related risks, creating/maintaining data dictionaries, and fostering a culture of data literacy across Compliance/MUFG.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Strategy and leadership: Define and/or implement the data governance strategy, collaborating with required country/regional/global counterparts, leading a regional DG team with oversight of DG Compliance activities including AML, Sanctions, ABC, Trade Surveillance etc.
- Governance: Ensure adoption of Global data governance policies and standards, providing strategic oversight and creating/adopting policies, standards, and guidelines appropriate for regional/local adoption.
- Data quality and management: Implement and oversee processes for data quality management, and data lineage to ensure data is accurate and consistent.
- Risk and compliance: Identify and mitigate data-related risks, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
- Reporting and monitoring: Ensure adoption of Global data governance policies and standards and provide strategic oversight for regional/local adoption.
- Stakeholder collaboration: Build strong partnerships with multiple internal stakeholders, including but not limited to system owners, business process owners, application managers, technology partners, internal audit.
- Data stewardship and culture: Support data owners and stewards to drive a data-driven culture through training, awareness and communication to improve data literacy across the organization.
- Technical implementation: Oversee the implementation of data governance tools, such as data dictionaries, key data elements (KDEs).
- Continuous improvement: Identify opportunities for improvement, stay abreast of emerging trends and technologies in data management, and refine policies and processes to adapt to changing business needs.
WORK EXPERIENCE:
- Essential: Substantial experience in a data governance or data management role, with a proven track record in a leadership position and managing complex projects.
- Deep understanding of data management principles, data architecture, data modelling, data quality tools (e.g., Collibra, Informatica), SQL, and data lifecycle management.
- A combination totalling 5-10 years of Risk/Compliance/Financial Crimes technology, analytics, and audit experience relating to compliance systems and controls.
- General knowledge of compliance systems such as KYC, Sanctions, Transaction Monitoring, Surveillance and Case Management.
- Extensive experience in implementing data governance frameworks, data quality processes, and data management.
- Experience interacting with the Executive Committee Leadership, control function leadership, as well as compliance subject matter experts.
- Knowledge of database structures, back-end functions, and data environments (such as Enterprise Data Warehouses).
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and project management skills.
- Strong understanding of data management concepts, data architecture, and relevant technologies.
- Proven ability to influence and lead cultural change within an organization regarding data use.
- Proven excellence of execution in complex and demanding situations.
- Collaborative with strong interpersonal communication skills.
- Process oriented coupled with a strong ability to develop appropriate program enhancing strategies.
- Detail-oriented and organized execution.
EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS:
- A bachelor's or master's degree in a technical or business-related field, such as Computer Science, Information Management, or Business Administration.

- Strategic thinking and problem-solving capabilities to align data initiatives with overall business objectives.
