Head of Platform Engineering

The Head of Platform Engineering leads the definition and execution of the platform engineering strategy, driving scalable, sustainable and secure platform infrastructure across MUFG’s global operations.

Responsibilities include shaping governance, innovation and productivity, standardising environments, managing budgets, and promoting a Dev Ops culture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive platform engineering strategy and roadmap aligned with digital transformation and business objectives.
  • Lead the design and implementation of self‑service platforms, CI/CD pipelines, and Dev Sec Ops practices to improve developer velocity and operational efficiency.
  • Own and govern the lifecycle, stability and compliance of non‑production and production environments, ensuring secure, controlled and optimised usage.
  • Oversee the financial management of platform engineering initiatives, including budgeting, licensing, vendor relationships and cost optimisation.
  • Ensure operational excellence through reliable, scalable and resilient platform infrastructure, addressing escalations in cloud, database, storage and security domains.
  • Manage large‑scale platform implementations, defining scope, documentation and safe technical execution while meeting quality, security and compliance requirements.
  • Lead risk and security governance, ensuring adherence to regulatory frameworks (e. g., DORA) and internal controls.
  • Provide people leadership, developing capabilities, fostering a growth mindset, and promoting an inclusive culture.
  • Collaborate with business units to deliver responsive, value‑driven solutions and maintain strong stakeholder relationships.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Extensive senior leadership experience in Technology Infrastructure, Platform Engineering, Site Reliability Engineering, or Build and Release in a global financial services environment.
  • Strong background in platform and systems engineering technologies (Linux, Windows, Kubernetes, cloud Iaa S, Ia C, databases, storage, etc.).
  • Proven track record of leading platform engineering teams across multiple time zones, delivering large scale, 24/7 production solutions.
  • Deep understanding of agile frameworks, iterative delivery, CI/CD workflow design and continuous improvement.
  • Experience with budgeting, licensing, vendor management, financial oversight and cost optimisation in technology environments.
  • Hands‑on knowledge of public cloud platforms (Azure, OCI, AWS), containerisation, orchestration, database technologies (MSSQL, Oracle, Mongo DB, Snowflake, SAP Sybase) and storage solutions (Dell EMC, Nutanix, Rubrik).
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to address complex, ambiguous technical challenges.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, capable of translating technical concepts into business outcomes.
  • Preferred ITIL v3 or higher qualification; strong knowledge of incident, problem and change management best practices.
  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
