The role will be responsible for working with the Strategic Sustainability Manager in developing a sustainability strategy, which will incorporate key recycling solutions across the site, creating and driving a culture of improvement and innovation in all aspects of waste management activity. Engaging with and working collaboratively with colleagues from across various Kew Gardens departments and delivering on Kew Gardens environmental objectives whilst proactively managing all waste activities on site.
Main Duties
- Working in partnership with Kew Gardens and Mitie's Strategic Sustainability Manager to deliver against the key objectives for the contract.
- To proactively engage, communicate, and collaborate with key Kew Gardens stakeholders in improving waste and recycling performance on the contract.
- To proactively engage, communicate, and collaborate with a range of Kew stakeholders and departments.
- Working with Kew Gardens and Strategic Sustainability Manager to introduce innovation and waste technology across the current waste service to improve the overall environmental performance and reduce disposal costs.
- To work with Mitie's Strategic Sustainability Manager to provide waste data analysis, identifying key trends and providing detailed feedback to Kew Gardens.
Operational Duties
- To manage waste and recycling sub-contractors, including health and safety, compliance and site security requirements.
- To supervise the on-site operational team, ensuring that appropriate waste and recycling procedures are adhered to.
- To supervise the waste movements in and around the current waste service area, including weekly area inspections and reporting of any QSHE issues accordingly whilst proactively improving the yard area for all parties.
- To provide training and education for all personnel involved in the handling and disposal of waste and recycling across the site, including cleaning teams, retail teams and other stakeholders as required.
- Monthly reporting to key stakeholders.
- Maintain and continually review all processes and systems currently in place and to assist with any proposals for improvements required.
- To remove waste materials from holding bins and sort into streams within the MRF prior to transfer into the appropriate segregated containers.
- To organise and undertake service routes around Kew Gardens to empty visitor facing bins and return contents to MRF area for sorting.
- To organise and bale clean recyclables and move bales to storage area on site awaiting collection.
- Ensure the cabin is kept clean, well maintained, and is in safe working order, i.e., PAT Tested, etc, reporting any issues to the Strategic Sustainability Manager.
- Have full knowledge and understanding of the cleaning process, including the agreed work to be carried out and time allocated to this.
- Maintain the designated waste yard area to an agreed level of cleanliness in line with Client requirements, carrying out all daily, weekly and periodic tasks.
- Have a full working knowledge of all cleaning equipment, materials and approved chemicals used within the premises and to attend all necessary training to be able to use them.
- To comply with the requirements of Health & Safety, other relevant legislation and Client policies.
- Use products carefully and look after all equipment.
- Report any maintenance issues to the Strategic Sustainability Manager.
- Understand and observe MITIE and Client site rules at all times.
- To wear personal protective equipment (PPE) issued is worn.
- Ensure correct PPE is worn and kept clean and tidy.
- Ensure all relevant safety signs (such as Wet Floor Warning Signs) are used correctly and appropriately at all times.
- To observe all Company and Client statutory fire and safety regulations and to promote good safety habits and methods of work.
- To deal with any complaints that fall within the job holder's duties and report these immediately to the Strategic Sustainability Manager.
- Perform miscellaneous cleaning duties as apparent or as instructed by the Strategic Sustainability Manager.
- Report in when arriving and leaving site using Workplace Plus.
- To undertake any other related duties which are within the job holder's capability, according to the needs of the business and as directed by the Strategic Sustainability Manager.
