As a Portering Manager, you will be responsible for the efficient and safe management of all portering services within the hospital, with a primary focus on patient movement and waste management. This also includes the coordination, supervision, and development of a large team of porters to ensure timely and compassionate transportation of patients, as well as the effective movement of equipment, specimens, waste, and supplies. The role is critical to supporting clinical services, enhancing patient experience, and maintaining the smooth operation of a busy healthcare facility operating 24/7.

Main Responsibilities

  • Lead, recruit, train, and develop a large portering team, creating a high‑performance culture focused on professionalism, wellbeing and patient‑centred service.
  • Manage staff rotas across a 24/7 operation, ensuring optimal staffing levels and fair application of HR policies, performance management, and succession planning.
  • Oversee the central portering control room to ensure efficient task allocation, dispatch, and tracking, maintaining strong service levels across all hospital departments.
  • Ensure the safe and timely movement of equipment, specimens, medical gases, waste, supplies, and other key items, maintaining compliance with infection control, COSHH, and health & safety standards.
  • Monitor, report, and improve performance against KPIs and SLAs, conducting regular audits and implementing service improvements where required.
  • Manage departmental budgets, equipment maintenance, and resource utilisation, identifying opportunities for efficiency savings and improved service delivery.
  • Build strong relationships with clinical teams, estates, security, and external contractors, acting as the main point of contact for portering and waste‑related issues.
  • Oversee waste management operations and contracts, ensuring compliance, addressing service failures, and delivering waste‑related improvement projects across the organisation.
