We are seeking an experienced Primary Design Engineer to join our High-Voltage Renewables Engineering Team here at Mitie Projects. This critical role ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of electrical networks through high-quality substation layouts and earthing design.

Key Responsibilities

  • Primary Design Engineering for HV/EHV AC substations (11kV–132kV), including AIS and GIS.
  • Produce electrical layouts for substations, cable routes, LV systems, switchrooms, and control rooms.
  • Design and analysis of earthing systems for substations, renewable energy sites (solar, wind, battery), and grid connections – with support from the earthing engineer.
  • Perform soil resistivity testing, EPR studies, touch/step voltage assessments, and lightning risk assessments.
  • Develop technical specifications for major electrical plant and ensure compliance with British and International Standards.
  • Interface with multidisciplinary teams (structural, planning, CAD) and manage external design suppliers.
  • Ensure compliance with CDM Regulations 2015, embed safety and sustainability by design.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team development.

Essential Requirements

  • Degree/HND/HNC in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems preferred).
  • Proven experience in primary electrical design for HV/EHV substations and BoP projects.
  • Strong knowledge of industry standards: BS7671, ENATS, NGTS, BS EN 61936-1, BS7354, etc.
  • Familiarity with G81 standards and DNO-approved equipment registers.
  • Ability to manage complex design interfaces and produce accurate technical documentation.
  • Proficiency in busbar calculations, earthing layouts, and risk assessments.
  • Working knowledge of CDM Regulations and designer responsibilities.

Desirable: Experience with 3D CAD tools (e.g., Revit) and earthing modelling software (CDEGS).
