Are you interested in working within the criminal justice system? In a core role supporting the police? Do you have the empathy to work with vulnerable people? We are looking for people who want to make a difference by working alongside the police in custody suites, caring for detainees – from supporting them during the time spent in custody, completing forensic samples, working with other agencies to support and help with detainees' rehabilitation.

Previous experience working within the police/security/armed forces would be beneficial, but we will train you in full on an Initial Training Course even without previous experience. The role requires the flexibility to work not only in your base custody suite but also across an assigned region in the Police Custody Suites and Force area. You will be expected to use a computer and various programs competently during your working day.

Compensation & Shift Pattern

Salary of £29,455.51 per annum. Full time: fixed shift rota pattern of 4 shifts on and 4 days off: 06:45‑19:00 for 2‑day shifts followed by 2‑night shifts of 18:45‑07:00; rolling rota available 2 years in advance. Part time: fixed shift rota pattern of 2-day shifts on, 8 days, 2 nights, 4 days off (06:45‑19:00 day shifts, 18:45‑07:00 night shifts); rolling rota available 2 years in advance. All employees are required to work full shifts; part‑time employees must still carry out some night shifts. You can earn £150 for each successful referral of a colleague who joins the team.

Training

Initial Training Course (ITC) will take place from 28th September at T2 Birmingham for 2 weeks, with a hotel provided. After selection, you will begin a 3‑week ITC Monday to Friday 8 am‑5 pm on full pay, followed by continued development.

Requirements

  • Previous police/security/forces experience is beneficial.
  • A reasonable level of spoken and written English and basic numeracy.
  • Competency in IT and computer use.
  • Full valid driving licence.
  • Must have right to work in the UK; British passport or ILR for ≥ 3 years with no absences > 3 months.
  • All candidates subject to police vetting checks; clean driving/criminal record essential.

Responsibilities

As a Custody Detention Officer you will provide physical, mental healthcare and wellbeing support to detainees. You will escort detainees, record observations as per their individual care plans, and work with colleagues and the police to address any detainee who poses a risk of self‑harm. You will work in a small team alongside police officers and receive support from experienced senior custody detention officers.
