About the Role:
The QHSE Manager is responsible for leading, developing and maintaining the Company's integrated management system (IMS) covering Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental management activities across all UK operations.
The role provides strategic leadership, governance and technical expertise to ensure compliance with applicable legislation, customer requirements and internationally recognised standards including ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and ISO 17020 where applicable.
The QHSE Manager will drive a culture of continuous improvement, operational excellence and risk reduction, whilst supporting business growth, customer satisfaction and employee wellbeing. The position serves as the primary point of contact for all QHSE matters and works closely with senior leadership, operational management, customers, external auditors and regulatory bodies.
Key Responsibilities:
Integrated Management System (IMS):
- Lead the development, implementation, maintenance and continual improvement of the Company's Integrated Management System (IMS) ensuring they are compliant with the requirements of ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and other applicable standards.
- Review and improve policies, procedures, processes and safe systems of work to ensure effectiveness and compliance.
- Ensure all controlled documentation is maintained, reviewed and updated in accordance with document control requirements.
Compliance & Governance:
- Act as the Company's subject matter expert for Quality, Health, Safety, Environmental and regulatory matters.
- Monitor changes in legislation, standards and regulatory requirements and communicate implications to the business.
- Support customer audits, client assessments and supplier evaluations.
Audit & Certification Management:
- Develop and manage the annual internal audit programme.
- Conduct internal audits across offices, operational sites and subcontractors.
- Coordinate external surveillance, recertification and customer audits.
- Manage audit findings, corrective actions and verification of effectiveness.
- Maintain accreditation and certification activities, including UKAS-related schemes where applicable.
Incident Management & Risk Control:
- Lead investigations into, identify root causes and implement corrective action for incidents, accidents, near misses and non-conformances.
- Monitor incident trends and produce management reports with recommendations for improvement.
- Provide guidance and support on risk assessments, COSHH assessments, method statements and safe working practices.
- Support emergency preparedness and business continuity planning activities.
Performance Monitoring & Reporting:
- Analyse trends, identify risks and highlight opportunities for improvement and prepare routine reports and dashboards for senior management.
- Support the setting and monitoring of key performance indicators (KPIs), annual QHSE objectives and targets.
Training & Culture:
- Promote a positive and proactive QHSE culture throughout the organisation.
- Develop and deliver QHSE training, awareness campaigns, toolbox talks and coaching managers
Operational & Business Support:
- Support tender submissions, customer questionnaires and prequalification activities.
- Provide QHSE input into new business opportunities, operational planning and project delivery.
Facilities, Sustainability & Environmental Management
- Oversee QHSE-related facilities management contracts including fire safety, waste management, environmental services and related compliance activities.
- Support initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impact and improving sustainability performance.
About you:
Qualifications:
Essential:
- NEBOSH Diploma, NCRQ Diploma or equivalent occupational health and safety qualification.
- Internal or Lead Auditor qualification in ISO management systems.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
Desirable:
- Chartered Membership of IOSH (CMIOSH) or working towards.
- Environmental or quality qualification and/or Lead Auditor certification
Experience & Knowledge:
Essential:
- Significant experience in a QHSE management role within engineering, technical services, manufacturing, infrastructure, industrial services, construction, utilities or oil & gas environments.
- Experience managing and maintaining integrated management systems.
- Demonstrable experience conducting audits and managing certification programmes.
- Experience investigating incidents and implementing corrective actions.
- Experience providing advice and guidance to operational leadership teams.
· Thorough understanding of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
· Strong knowledge of UK Health & Safety and Environmental legislation.
· Understanding of risk management principles and incident investigation techniques.
· Knowledge of document control and management review processes.
Desirable:
- Experience with ISO 17020 accredited inspection activities.
- Experience managing multi-site operations and supporting customer and regulatory audits.
- Experience in sustainability and environmental management programmes.
