The role involves managing and auditing disease control programmes for enzootic (endemic) and epizootic (high-risk) diseases. Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with animal welfare standards and traceability requirements through inspections, enforcement and cross-compliance checks, supporting trade facilitation, and providing veterinary expertise across specialisms such as cattle, pigs, sheep, aquatics, avian species, equines, felines, canines, reptiles and amphibians, and zoological or exotic companion animals. The role also includes epizootic disease preparedness, detection and eradication, and establishing and maintaining productive working relationships with DAERA’s Divisional Veterinary Officers (DVOs) and other stakeholders as needed.
Skills/Qualifications Required and Requisites:
- Veterinary medicine degree.
- Full membership of The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.
- A minimum of 1 year of post-graduate experience working with farmed animals or in veterinary public health.
- Right to work and live in the UK (UK National, Settlement or pre-settlement status, any other), possess a dependant visa or be eligible for a Skilled Worker Visa.
- Meet medical requirements and have undergone a tuberculosis assessment, demonstrating TB immunity.
- Possess a driving licence and means of transport (car) right after the training period.
Terms and Conditions offered for successful candidates:
- Type contract: A permanent full-time contract, with a four-week probationary period.
- Salary: Starting at £53,000 - £55,000 per year.
- Holidays: 22 standard days plus 8 public holiday days, pro rata upon entry. Paid holiday entitlement increases incrementally to 25 days after 3 years.
- Overtime: £28.00 an hour.
- Normal working days: Monday to Friday, 7.5 hours per day.
- Hours of work: Contract for 37.5 hours each week.
- Mileage allowance: 45p per mile for mileage exceeding the limit when working at a site other than your base location.
- Comprehensive paid training both before you start and during your deployment.
- Salary reviews conducted annually based on performance, starting with a 1% increase and capped at 3%, with rewards for outstanding performance.
- Membership of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (MRCVS) and Improve International's OV Conference.
- Substantial relocation package.
