This is an exciting opportunity to join the well-established and innovative team of Knowledge Lawyers at Mishcon's London office, led by our Knowledge Partner, Kate Higgins. Being part of the Knowledge Lawyer team at Mishcon will place you at the heart of the firm's vision to be technologically transformed, delivering knowledge for businesses of the future and shaping possibilities for our people and our clients.

You will be joining the Employment Department's existing Knowledge team at a hugely exciting time in the growth of the Employment Department and the development of employment law. The Knowledge Lawyers are a team of dedicated 'lawyer to lawyer' experts and benefit from the same career structure (including partnership) as fee-earners. They develop knowledge assets and support excellence and brand in our offering; train and mentor our lawyers; deliver engaging content and thinking to clients and our wider external knowledge communities; and steer us in being compliant, more efficient and profitable in the way we practise law.

This role, which has a strong client-facing and thought-leadership focus, is central to driving success for the Employment Department and the Firm as a whole. You will:

  • Shape and deliver the department's knowledge strategy, collaborating with the other Knowledge Lawyers in the Employment Department and with the wider Firm to implement their strategic knowledge visions.
  • Provide targeted, strategic support to identify, leverage and - with the support of the BD team and fee-earners - implement new and emerging Business Development initiatives.
  • Use knowledge, AI and other technology to develop business opportunities, add value to key client relationships, and to bring efficiencies to client service delivery.
  • Deliver content for the Department's communication strategy including client alerts and articles in other Mishcon and external publications, including the legal, trade, and general press.
  • Alongside our highly regarded Academy, co-ordinate, design, prepare, capture and deliver internal and client legal training.
  • Collect, draft, maintain and keep updated key precedents, know how, and client guides including with automated document assembly, following the Firm's house style.
  • Monitor law and practice developments and provide horizon scanning updates to both our lawyers and clients.
  • Manage the Employment Department's knowledge pages on the Firm's intranet (Mishcon Knowledge) and other know how repositories.
  • Work with Risk & Compliance and the Partners to implement and embed best practice (Mq2) and risk management practices across the Department and support in any statutory, regulatory and other risk management changes.
  • Respond to technical law and practice queries from fee-earners.
  • Undertake in-depth research into a variety of areas to produce clear and accessible materials for fee-earners and clients.
  • Contribute to the development of national policy and legislation relating to employment law.
  • Other general Knowledge Lawyer duties.

Ideally the equivalent of around 5+ years PQE and either: a Knowledge Lawyer/PSL already or switching from fee-earning but able to demonstrate Knowledge Lawyer skills and a track record of knowledge contribution.

Excellent technical skills, with experience gained working in comparable, renowned law firms. Deep knowledge of employment law and practice. Real enthusiasm for, and proven record of, business development and knowledge commercialisation. Excellent writing and drafting skills, and attention to detail. Great teamwork skills and the ability to work independently with self-motivation. Ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels, both internally and with clients. Ability to embrace and promote new ways of working and aptitude to work with emerging legal technology. Personable and confident, able to build relationships with colleagues, clients and external organisations. Resilient and calm under pressure. Adaptable and flexible approach. Proactive and takes initiative. Sound operational knowledge of Microsoft programs.

The Employment team at Mishcon de Reya works across complex, high profile and high-stakes situations, acting at the highest level for both employers and senior executives. As a top-tier practice acting at the forefront of employment law, we are regularly instructed on cases that raise the most important legal questions of the day, from diversity and gender pay, to employment status and the implications of the 'gig' economy, to the interplay between data, transparency and privacy. The team is renowned for its strategic approach and litigation expertise, regularly appearing in the Employment Appeal Tribunal, High Court, Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court. We currently have around 70 fee earners and 17 partners, making us one of the biggest employment teams in London. Our work covers the full spectrum of contentious and non-contentious employment law, and we work seamlessly with our dedicated incentives and business immigration teams.

While our clients span all sectors, we have a particular emphasis on financial services, fashion and retail, and the luxury and media sectors. We have significant experience dealing with the complexities of LLPs, private equity and venture capital firms. Mishcon de Reya is an independent law firm, which now employs over 1400 people with more than 650 lawyers offering a wide range of legal services to companies and individuals. The firm has grown rapidly in recent years, showing more than 40% revenue growth in the past five years alone. With presence in London, Oxford, Cambridge, Singapore, Hong Kong and UAE, the firm services an international community of clients and provides advice in situations where the constraints of geography often do not apply. The work the firm undertakes is cross-border, multi-jurisdictional and complex, centred around three increasingly entwined and connected sectors: the Innovation Economy, Private Wealth and Capital, and Real Estate. The firm is known as a disputes powerhouse with a formidable capacity firmwide for dispute resolution. We strive to create a fully diverse and inclusive workplace where all our people are empowered to fulfil their potential. We are proud of our agile working culture and are always happy to talk flexible working.
