This is an exciting opportunity for an eager recent graduate or early-career mechanical engineer to gain hands-on experience in mechanical design, analysis and product development.

As Junior Mechanical Engineer you will develop, analyse and validate Mechanical designs in accordance with the product specification or defined project scope. Working with a variety of key stakeholders as projects may consist of customer funded projects, R&D “New Product Introduction” projects, technology projects and sustainability initiatives.

The talented individual we are seeking will play a key role in supporting the research, development, and implementation of high temperature and nuclear imaging products. Working alongside a multidisciplined team, you will be responsible for supporting projects from conception to completion.

This is a full-time role based in Farnborough and belongs to the Technologies Group, EMEA and Asia reporting to the Projects & Design Manager.

Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities of the Junior Mechanical Engineer include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in designing and analysing mechanical components and systems using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks and AutoCAD).
  • Conduct simulations, testing, and analysis to ensure product functionality and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, electrical, and quality assurance, to support product development.
  • Prepare technical documentation, reports, and presentations for project updates.
  • Support prototyping, testing, and troubleshooting of mechanical designs.
  • Perform engineering calculations and simulations to support design decisions.
  • Perform material selection and cost analysis.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and company policies.
  • Assist in process improvement and problem-solving initiatives.
  • Assist with design reviews with internal and external customers
  • Creating sketches, outline drawings, detail drawings and assembly drawings
  • Design for manufacture, ensuring products are safe, reliable, and meet required industry standards
  • Creating accurate part and assembly models
  • Prepare Technical Construction Files for product compliance verification
  • Design verification and functional testing
  • Generating reports, calculations, test procedures, manuals, and master data within the ERP system (Item data, BOMs, Routes)
  • Assist in preparing cost sheets (material and labour costs) and technical commentary for Sales Enquires
  • Incorporating Component Change Requests, Design Change Requests and performing root Cause Analysis and lessons learned
  • Provide technical support for internal customers, such as procurement, production, and test departments
  • Stay current with advancements in mechanical engineering and integrate best practices into project work
  • Foster a collaborative and innovative engineering culture
  • Participation in continuous improvement initiatives as necessary

The Person

The key skills and qualities of a Junior Mechanical Engineer are:

Essential

  • Qualified to a minimum degree level in relevant field or relevant experience
  • Experience of mechanical design and development using 2D and 3D CAD software (preferably SolidWorks and AutoCAD)
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to review and work with stakeholders to prioritise workload of self
  • Excellent communication, time management and organisational skills

Desirable

  • Experience of preparing cost sheets for Sales Enquires
  • Strong project management and organizational skills
