Role β Substation Mechanical Supervisor
Location β Exeter
Mint Selection are partnered with a leading organisation within the energy sector to recruit an experienced Substation Mechanical Supervisor for a project based in Exeter. The role will be focused specifically on the 400kV substation package, taking responsibility for supervising the mechanical installation of high-voltage substation equipment and associated infrastructure. This is an excellent opportunity to join a major energy infrastructure project on a long-term contract, working within an experienced project delivery team through the construction, installation and commissioning phases.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate mechanical installation activities across the 400kV substation package, ensuring works are completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with the project programme.
- Oversee the installation and assembly of HV substation equipment including switchgear, transformers, busbars, support structures and associated mechanical infrastructure.
- Supervise the mechanical installation of GIS/AIS equipment and ensure all works are completed in accordance with manufacturer requirements, approved drawings and project specifications.
- Coordinate mechanical subcontractors and installation teams, providing technical support and resolving site issues as required.
- Ensure installation works comply with approved drawings, specifications, ITPs, RAMS, manufacturer instructions and relevant transmission standards.
- Take ownership of mechanical QA/QC activities including inspections, quality walk-downs, ITP compliance, punch listing, snagging and management of non-conformances through to close-out.
- Monitor workmanship and construction progress, identifying potential delays, installation issues, design clashes or quality concerns and implementing corrective actions where required.
- Coordinate closely with electrical, civil and commissioning teams to ensure interfaces between packages are effectively managed.
- Conduct toolbox talks, daily briefings and site inspections while promoting a strong health, safety, environmental and quality culture.
- Ensure works are carried out in accordance with RAMS, permit-to-work systems, project HSEQ procedures and applicable National Grid requirements.
- Maintain accurate site records, inspection documentation, progress reports and quality documentation throughout construction.
- Support short-term planning, contractor coordination meetings, programme updates and reporting to the Construction/Site Manager.
- Assist with inspection, testing, commissioning and handover activities as the project progresses towards energisation.
Experience Required
- Proven experience as a Mechanical Supervisor, Substation Supervisor or Installation Supervisor on high-voltage substation projects.
- Minimum 5 years' relevant substation experience, with 10+ years highly desirable.
- Strong experience delivering transmission-level substations, ideally at 400kV.
- Previous experience working on National Grid (NGET) and/or SPEN sites is highly desirable.
- Hands-on background in the installation and assembly of HV substation equipment including switchgear, transformers and associated mechanical infrastructure.
- Previous experience with GE / GE Vernova equipment would be highly advantageous.
- Strong understanding of GIS/AIS equipment installation, mechanical assembly, alignment, inspection and quality requirements.
- Good QA/QC knowledge including ITPs, inspections, NCRs, snagging, quality records and handover documentation.
- Strong understanding of RAMS, permit-to-work systems and safe systems of work within high-voltage environments.
- NGET Competent Person / NSI 6 & NSI 8 certification is desirable but not essential.
- Excellent leadership, communication and organisational skills with the ability to effectively manage installation teams and subcontractors.
