Responsibilities
  • Ensure the security and safety of children and young people in custody.
  • Provide day‑to‑day support and interventions when required.
  • Oversee and facilitate safe movement around the site.
  • Supervise and respond to behavioural issues, de‑escalate situations and apply conflict‑resolution techniques.
  • Collaborate with young people, their families and carers to agree on interventions or referrals.
  • Work closely with other professionals and organisations to improve outcomes.
  • Exercise sound judgement, using evidence‑based approaches.
  • Participate in regular supervision with an experienced practitioner.
  • Complete a Level 4 Qualification after the 12‑month probationary period.

Eligibility
  • At least 18 years old.
  • Meet Civil Service nationality requirements.
  • Pass a medical and fitness assessment.

  • Have a suitable standard of hearing (without hearing aids).
Pay & Hours

The initial training is 37 hours a week. After training, you can choose to work 37, 39 or 41 hours a week. Your annual salary will reflect your weekly hours.

  • 37 hours a week: £33,746 a year
  • 39 hours a week: £35,875 a year
  • 41 hours a week: £38,003 a year

Other Information

All salary figures quoted include any additional allowances that are applicable to the role/location. Young Offender Institutions operate 24 h a day, 7 days a week; this role will cover shift patterns that include evenings, some nights, weekends and public holidays. Applicants should bring a suitable DBS check and evidence of fit for duty (e.g., medical clearance). Travel to work: a driving licence and own transport is beneficial but not essential, unless specified. Shift times are fixed; ensure reliable transport.
