Overview
All staff have a responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of children. The post holder must undertake the appropriate level of training and is responsible for ensuring that they understand and work within the safeguarding policies of the organisation.
The Department will continue to comply with UK Immigration Rules applied in the UK and Civil Service. Advance into Justice is a recruitment scheme targeted at supporting those who have served in the Armed Forces and their families into employment within operational roles within HMPPS. The scheme is open to Service Leavers, Armed Forces Veterans, their Spouses and Legal Partners. Eligible applicants who pass the assessment processes will be offered a 2‑year fixed‑term appointment with the option after 12 months to convert to permanency, subject to approval, under Exception 10 of the Civil Service recruitment principles.
Responsibilities
Ensure the security and safety of children and young people while providing day‑to‑day support in a custodial setting.
Intervene when required, oversee and facilitate safe movement around the site, and provide supervision to maintain safety.
Work with children and young people who may have committed serious offences, come from challenging backgrounds, and/or have mental health needs, supporting them to build better futures.
Provide practical support for the everyday life of children in custody.
Maintain continuous professional development and apply evidence‑based approaches to improve outcomes for the young people.
Qualifications & Requirements
Be at least 18 years old at the point you commence employment.
Meet the Civil Service nationality requirements.
Pass a medical and fitness assessment, including eyesight and hearing tests.
Have a suitable standard of hearing (without the use of hearing aids).
Pass a DBS check.
Have strong communication and influencing skills.
Demonstrate commitment to high standards of care and service.
Show effective decision‑making abilities, empathy and understanding.
Be able to identify and assess the complex needs of the children and young people you work with.
Be able to de‑escalate situations, manage behavioural issues and apply conflict resolution techniques.
Work collaboratively with young people, their families or carers and with other professionals to agree on interventions or referrals.
Approach your work with respectful curiosity, balancing challenge and support to help young people reach their potential and stay safe.
Have the ability to exercise sound judgement and regularly evaluate the effectiveness of your actions and methods.
Training & career progression
Following a successful 12‑month probationary period you will have the opportunity to undertake a Level 4 qualification focused on working with children and young people in custody. Upon completion you may progress to a Band 4 Youth Justice Worker Specialist role. Ongoing training and development for specialist skills such as child protection and safeguarding will be provided.

Pay
The initial training is 37 hours a week. After training you can choose to work 37, 39 or 41 hours a week; your annual salary will reflect your weekly hours. Salary figures (for National 37 hours, including an unsocial hours allowance) are £33,746 (HMP Wetherby, HMP Werrington) and £39,525 (HMP Feltham – Outer London, including a £2,000 market supplement). The role involves shift patterns that will include evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays.
