The role is for a Prison Officer with specialist Physical Education Instructor training. The holder will supervise and support prisoners in a secure custodial setting, ensuring high-standard services, security and control. They will also act as a Supervising Officer where required and have supervisory responsibilities for staff.
Responsibilities, Activities and Duties:
- Initiate, develop and deliver physical education programmes and activities for prisoners, customizing for individual needs.
- Deliver gym inductions including health and safety and equipment usage.
- Deliver pre‑planned accredited education activities and manual handling training following OFSTED guidelines.
- Interview and allocate prisoners onto courses, conduct risk and health assessments, liaise with healthcare, and assist rehabilitation of sports injuries.
- Regularly review Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) and monitor targets to challenge prisoners.
- Maintain contact with awarding bodies regarding courses and certification.
- Identify opportunities for and manage prisoners’ participation in external activities, events and award schemes.
- Act as internal verifier for internal courses.
- Provide fitness training for staff and contribute to Well‑Being Days.
- Conduct equipment checks, maintain logs, order new equipment, and ensure repairs.
- Supervise, manage and control prisoners lawfully, safely, and securely.
- Exercise the powers of a constable, conduct searches, undertake external escorts, and respond as 'first on scene' incidents.
- Maintain and update systems in line with local agreements, and prepare documentation for managers.
- Attend and contribute to relevant meetings, complete Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan, and establish professional relationships with prisoners and staff.
- Understand and comply with national/local policies and legislation.
- Act as a Supervising Officer according to designated roles: Safe, Decent and Secure / YP; Category A Escorts.

- Successful completion of POELT and probation period.

- For transfer to a Young Persons establishment, successful assessment for suitability with young people.
Hours of Work and Allowances:
- HMPPS staff on closed pay structures work a 39‑hour week: 37 standard hours plus 2 additional pensionable hours (ACHP).
- Unsocial hours are recognised with a 17% payment.
- Work may include evenings, nights, weekends and bank/public holidays.
