The Production Instructor will supervise, impart knowledge, and provide skills to prisoners in non-specialist workshops where no qualifications are delivered. The focus is on maintaining a structured, disciplined environment that mirrors external employment experience. Security, control, and high service standards must be upheld at all times. Where circumstances require, the Instructor may temporarily supervise in specialist workshops (e.g., emergency, ad‑hoc or short‑term duties).
Responsibilities
- Participate in the selection of prisoners for the workshop.
- Induct prisoners, training them in health and safety, COSHH, machinery and tools usage, and ensure all equipment is safe and accounted for.
- Provide support and tailor learning and training to individual needs; set work schedules and manage targets, quality standards and contractual delivery.
- Supervise, manage and control prisoners safely and securely; hold responsibility for performance, motivation, discipline, appraisal and development.
- Conduct metal‑detector scans or rub‑down searches of prisoners attending and leaving workshops.
- Initiate product development reviews to maintain output levels and provide varied work and experience for prisoners.
- Contribute to risk and health‑and‑safety assessments, including consumables and workshop areas.
- Actively contribute to prisoner reports, parole and sentence planning, ACCT, VRIR and SIRs; open necessary forms and provide information to case managers.
- Maintain regular communications via radio net in line with the Local Security Strategy.
- Request materials and estimate usage to meet work targets and provide quality assurance against product specifications.
- Log attendance, approve prisoner hours and wages, and record piece work where appropriate.
- Attend relevant meetings and provide administrative support, preparing documentation for managers and maintaining systems.
Requirements
- Proficiency in spoken English; Welsh may be required where specified in Wales.
- Demonstrated experience in supervising or training in a structured environment.
- Knowledge of health and safety, COSHH, machinery, and tools handling.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to manage security checks and maintain safe working conditions.
