- Position: Youth Justice Worker – HMP Wetherby (HMYOI)
- Start Salary: £36,816 for a 39‑hour week (including 20% unsocial hours)
Public holidays count towards holiday allowance.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure the security and safety of children and young people in custody.
- Provide day‑to‑day support, facilitate safe movement around the site and supervise activities.
- Intervene in challenging situations, de‑escalate conflicts, and manage behavioural issues.
- Collaborate with young people, their families or carers to agree on interventions or referrals.
- Work closely with other professionals and organisations to improve outcomes.
- Continuously evaluate the effectiveness of actions and methods using evidence‑based approaches.
- Undergo 12‑month probation and, upon successful completion, pursue a Level 4 qualification in working with children and young people in custody.
Qualifications & Eligibility
- Minimum age 18 years.
- Meet Civil Service nationality requirements (see details above).
- Pass a medical and fitness assessment, including eyesight and hearing tests.
- Hold a suitable standard of hearing without aids.
- Have a DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Service).
- Display strong communication and influencing skills, commitment to high standards of care, effective decision‑making, empathy and understanding.
- Training and Career Progression
Initial training lasts 37 hours a week. After training you may choose to work 37, 39 or 41 hours per week.
Following successful completion of the 12‑month probationary period you can undertake a Level 4 qualification and may progress to a Band 4 Youth Justice Worker Specialist role.
