Overview

This post is for a Senior Forensic Psychologist with the Youth Custody Services (YCS) based at HMYOI Wetherby.

The post holder will be registered as a forensic psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

The role is integral to YCS Psychology Services, supporting a population of approximately 400 children in custody.

The service operates within a trauma‑informed, evidence‑based framework, collaborating across partner agencies to promote the best interests of the child.

Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist psychiatric and psychological assessment, treatment and supervision for children and young people detained in HMP YCS.
  • Act as a Senior Leadership Team member and contribute to interventions, safety, children’s support services, staff well‑being and support.
  • Line‑manage and supervise the practice of other staff, including trainee psychologists, ensuring high quality clinical practice.
  • Co‑ordinate clinical supervision for trainees on recognised training routes.
  • Participate in organisational initiatives across the wider HMPPS Psychology Services Group, including CPD and career development programmes.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Professional qualification as a forensic psychologist, registered with the HCPC.
  • Minimum of 18 months post‑registration experience (preferably 2 years) at the time of application and at least 2 years of clinical experience at the point of taking up the post.
  • Experience providing clinical supervision and knowledge of effective practice models.
  • Experience working with children involved in the youth justice system is desirable, though full training and support will be provided.
  • Full member of the relevant division of the British Psychological Society (BPS) or a Chartered Psychologist is an advantage.
  • Good written and spoken English; ability to produce clear clinical reports.
