The job holder will supervise prisoners within waste management and recycling environments, ensuring safe collection, processing and disposal. They will foster relationships with the prisoner workforce and support their rehabilitation through training and guidance.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Supervise and escort prisoners to collect, process and dispose of waste/recycling from all areas inside the establishment.
  • Comply with Health and Safety policies, procedures and legislation.
  • Accurately record all waste removed from site, including weight, cost and revenue, and contribute to control measures for restricted and confidential waste.
  • Monitor, maintain and account for all workshop tools, equipment and raw materials, ensuring safety and security.
  • Open and manage the workshop area, issue tools, supervise prisoner work parties, and oversee quality of work in line with local procedures.
  • Participate in the selection, induction and training of prisoners for the workshop covering health and safety, COSHH, machinery and tool usage, WMU objectives, discipline, manual handling and PPE.
  • Provide tailored learning and training to prisoners, set work schedules, manage targets and quality standards.
  • Supervise and control prisoners to ensure safety, security, motivation, discipline, appraisal and development, including conducting searches.
  • Contribute to prisoner reports, parole and sentence planning, completing documentation such as ACCTs, SIRs, IEPs, regime monitoring, training records and Progress books/trackers.
  • Manage workshop resources: request materials, maintain stock levels, log attendance, approve prisoner hours and wages, and provide administrative support including liaison with contractors.
  • Maintain effective communication and security using radio equipment, support local contingency plans, escort technical contractors, act as banksman, and drive estates vehicles and plant equipment as required.

  • Communicate and influence effectively within the establishment.
  • Show flexibility to meet changing operational requirements.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Manual handling qualification, basic security awareness and break‑away techniques.
  • Relevant training in safe custody practices and health and safety.
  • Experience supervising or leading a group in a correctional environment preferred.
  • Qualification or training in waste management or recycling is desirable but not mandatory.

Technical & Ability Requirements

  • Basic maths and English writing skills.
  • Basic proficiency in IT systems.
  • Ability to communicate in English; Welsh in Wales may be required.
