This is a non‑operational instructional job in an establishment. The job holder will supervise, impart knowledge and skills to prisoners in a specialist workshop to improve their employability upon release, supporting national qualifications and working with external organisations such as local colleges.
Responsibilities, Activities and Duties:
- Participate in selecting prisoners for the workshop.
- Induct prisoners and train them in health & safety, COSHH, machinery and tool use.
- Provide support and tailor learning to individual needs.
- Set work schedules, manage targets and maintain delivery of contractual arrangements.
- Assess and evaluate prisoners’ skills against national qualification standards.
- Supervise and maintain discipline, performance and motivation of prisoners.
- Maintain regular communications via radio net in accordance with Local Security Strategy.
- Complete necessary forms (ACCT, VRIR, SIR) and contribute to incentive reports.
- Conduct metal detector scans or rub‑down searches of prisoners attending and leaving workshops.
- Provide quality assurance against product specification.
- Log attendance, approve prisoner hours and wages, record piece‑work where appropriate.
- Carry out fabric and tool checks, maintain security of areas, log faults and undertake planned maintenance of machinery.
- Contribute to prisoner reports including parole and sentence planning.
- Update training records and monitor regimen.
- Contribute to health and safety risk assessments for the workshop.
- Request and estimate materials to meet work targets.
- Initiate product development reviews to maintain output levels.
- Participate in self‑audit and achieve Service Delivery Indicators.
- Complete administrative activities to support smooth workshop operation.

Working Hours:
Standard full‑time working hours are 37 hours per week, excluding unpaid breaks.
