Job Overview
The London Probation Regional Training and Skills Development Department is being established to design, lead and deliver an ambitious programme of learning, coaching and practice support for probation staff across the region.
This managerial role provides operational leadership and assurance within the department, line‑managing coaches, assuring quality of delivery and ensuring the department’s objectives are consistently implemented.
Applicants will be based in London, work full‑time (37 hours per week), and will have the opportunity to work flexibly from home, Mo J sites or a base office as the role—subject to business needs—permits.
The role is a 12‑month contract with potential to become permanent.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide operational leadership and line management to Learning and Skills Coaches.
- Ensure coaching, mentoring and learning activity meets probation best‑practice standards and regional priorities.
- Undertake and oversee quality assurance of learning and coaching activity, providing feedback and driving improvement.
- Collaborate with line managers, PDUs and senior leaders to translate learning into improved probation practice.
- Use performance data and assurance activity to monitor impact, identify learning needs and risks.
- Contribute to operational governance, risk escalation and continuous improvement of delivery within the agreed framework.
- Support inspections, audits and assurance processes as required.

- Experience of assuring quality and supporting practice improvement.
- Ability to manage staff performance, wellbeing and professional development.
- Strong organisational and prioritisation skills in a complex environment.
- Confidence working within structured governance and quality frameworks.
- Experience of learning, coaching or mentoring roles.
- Experience providing line‑management, including workforce development.
- Understanding of practice‑improvement approaches.
