The Production Instructor – Specialist Workshop will provide supervision, skill development and training to prisoners to improve their employment prospects on release and reduce re‑offending. The role ensures high‑standard service delivery, maintains security and control, and supports prisoners in achieving nationally recognised qualifications. This position has no line‑management responsibilities but requires regular unsocial hours and may be based in a MoJ office or work‑share arrangements.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the selection process of prisoners for the workshop/area.
  • Induct prisoners and provide training on health and safety, COSHH, machinery and tools.
  • Support prisoners with tailored learning plans to meet individual needs.
  • Set work schedules, manage targets and quality standards, maintaining delivery of contractual arrangements.
  • Assess and evaluate prisoners’ skills up to national qualification standards.
  • Supervise and maintain discipline of prisoners, managing performance, motivation, and development.
  • Maintain regular communications via radio net in line with the Local Security Strategy.
  • Complete ACCT, VRIR, SIR and IEP reports as required.
  • Conduct metal detector scans or searches of prisoners attending and leaving workshops.
  • Provide quality assurance against product specifications.
  • Log attendance, approve prisoner hours worked and wages, including piece‑work where applicable.
  • Check workshop facilities, security, and maintain maintenance programme on machinery.
  • Contribute to prisoner reports, including parole and sentence planning.
  • Update prisoner training records and complete regime monitoring information.
  • Contribute to Health and Safety risk assessments for the workshop and specialist areas.
  • Request materials, estimate usage, and manage procurement to meet work targets.
  • Initiate product development reviews and maintain workshop output levels.
  • Participate in self‑audit and achieve Service Delivery Indicators (SDIs).

Working Hours & Pay

The role requires working regular unsocial hours. A 17% (additional) payment will be added to the basic salary to recognise duties performed outside 0700 – 1900hrs Monday to Friday, including evenings, nights, weekends and Bank/Public holidays. The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. Hybrid Work may combine base location, different MoJ sites and/or from home – this role cannot be worked overseas.

Location & Employment Terms

Successful candidates will be appointed to a MoJ office location, possibly the nearest Justice Collaboration Centre or Justice Satellite Office. The post is full time (37 hours per week) and may include flexible patterns where business needs permit. All applications are considered in accordance with the HMPPS Flexible Working policy. National security checks and DBS Enhanced are required.

Qualifications & Experience

Applicants should have experience of working with prisoners or in a correctional environment. Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation, experience of industrial standard machinery and equipment, and the ability to achieve nationally recognised qualifications for prisoners will be advantageous.
