Overview

Part‑Time Probation Services Officer (24hrs per week). The role is based in the National team in Scunthorpe, with interview dates Monday 18th, Tuesday 19th or Wednesday 20th May 2026.

Responsibilities

  • Work with people on probation before and after sentence, including assessment, sentence implementation, offender management and producing reports.
  • Provide case management support to a full range of people on probation, utilising service procedures and practice directions that underpin professional judgement.
  • Assess and manage risks, provide information to courts and work closely with agencies throughout the justice system.
  • Support offenders in practical areas such as housing and employment, and offer professional insight and guidance.
  • Maintain accurate records and produce reports to tight deadlines.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Empathetic, patient and resilient with strong communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Experience working with people who have social or personal difficulties – degree not required.
  • Good writing skills and the ability to produce clear and accurate reports.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing, with written communication assessed across the application form and verbal communication assessed in the interview.

Application Process

Complete the short application form and answer Civil Service Behaviours and Experience based questions. You will also sit the Civil Service Judgement Test (CSJT). If successful, your application will be sifted after the deadline, followed by interview if you meet the lead behaviour. Progression beyond the interview is not guaranteed, but you will be kept informed at each stage.

  • The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows.
  • Part‑time, flexible and job‑sharing working patterns are encouraged where they meet the demands of the role.
  • All applications for part‑time, flexible and job‑sharing working patterns will be considered in accordance with the HMPPS Flexible Working policy.
  • Standard full‑time working hours are 37 hours per week excluding unpaid breaks.
  • The role is currently advertised without VISOR vetting to enable appointment to take place as soon as possible, however, VISOR vetting will be required post‑offer.
  • Some PSO roles may require the completion of an apprenticeship.
  • Any applicant must have the right to work in the UK and meet Civil Service nationality rules.
