Responsibilities

  • Protect the public, manage prisoners, act as peacekeepers, counsellors and teachers, and support fellow staff.
  • Work various shifts and maintain a safe environment for prisoners and the wider community.

Eligibility

  • Be at least 18 years old at the point of commencement of employment.
  • Meet Civil Service nationality requirements.
  • Pass medical and fitness assessment, eyesight and hearing assessment (without hearing aids).
  • Visible tattoos must not be offensive, discriminatory, violent or intimidating; facial tattoos are generally not acceptable except for cultural, religious or medical reasons.
  • For high-security (category A) prisons, have lived in the UK for the last 3 years.
  • Have a UK driving licence and own transport is beneficial but not essential.
  • Maintain the legal right to live and work in the Civil Service and in the United Kingdom.

Training and Working Hours

  • Initial training is 37 hours a week.
  • After training you may choose to work 37, 39 or 41 hours a week.
  • The role is highly variable and may involve peacekeeping, counselling, teaching or behavioural management.
  • Prisons operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so shifts include evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays.

Compensation

  • 37 hours a week = £33,746 a year.
  • 39 hours a week = £35,875 a year.
  • 41 hours a week = £38,003 a year.
  • All salary figures quoted include any additional allowances that are applicable to the role or location.
