Responsibilities
- Protect the public, manage prisoners, act as peacekeepers, counsellors and teachers, and support fellow staff.
- Work various shifts and maintain a safe environment for prisoners and the wider community.
Eligibility
- Be at least 18 years old at the point of commencement of employment.
- Meet Civil Service nationality requirements.
- Pass medical and fitness assessment, eyesight and hearing assessment (without hearing aids).
- Visible tattoos must not be offensive, discriminatory, violent or intimidating; facial tattoos are generally not acceptable except for cultural, religious or medical reasons.
- For high-security (category A) prisons, have lived in the UK for the last 3 years.
- Have a UK driving licence and own transport is beneficial but not essential.
- Maintain the legal right to live and work in the Civil Service and in the United Kingdom.
Essential Skills and Qualities

Training and Working Hours
- Initial training is 37 hours a week.
- After training you may choose to work 37, 39 or 41 hours a week.
- The role is highly variable and may involve peacekeeping, counselling, teaching or behavioural management.
- Prisons operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so shifts include evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays.
Compensation
- 37 hours a week = £33,746 a year.
- 39 hours a week = £35,875 a year.
- 41 hours a week = £38,003 a year.
- All salary figures quoted include any additional allowances that are applicable to the role or location.
