Overview
This is an operational role directly supervising work groups of offenders serving a community sentence. The post holder will be responsible for all work site supervision tasks and will work with service users to ensure that all tasks are carried out to the best of their ability. This role may include driving service vehicles to transport people or equipment. Community Payback Supervisors will work with a diverse mix of individuals, so it’s important that you’re empathetic, a good communicator and happy to take the lead. It’s all about supporting offenders on their journey and making your community a better place. As a Community Payback supervisor, you’ll be at the heart of this work, leading small teams to complete their unpaid work hours. You’ll supervise and motivate them to complete a range of manual tasks to pay back for the harm they’ve caused. Tasks could include clearing overgrowth to make public spaces safer, restoring community facilities such as sports halls and playgrounds, planting trees or laying flowerbeds, and litter picking and graffiti removal. On a typical day, you’ll spend up to 7 hours supervising a group at a Community Payback unpaid work placement.
Responsibilities
- Supervise work groups of offenders on community payback projects to ensure tasks are carried out to the required standard.
- Lead and motivate teams to complete a range of manual tasks that contribute to reparation in the community.
- Work on projects such as clearing overgrowth, restoring facilities, planting, litter picking and graffiti removal; may involve driving service vehicles to transport people or equipment.
- Exercise appropriate authority to maintain discipline and good behaviour within working groups and alert relevant staff to any infringements.
- Coordinate with volunteers or staff from partner organisations as part of project delivery.
- Be adaptable to start times, with a pattern that may include weekends and some evenings.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Permanent manual driving licence is required for this role.
- Empathetic with good communication skills and comfortable taking the lead in a diverse environment.
- Willingness to work weekends as part of the normal pattern; higher rates apply for weekend days worked.
- Role may require regular weekend working to support operational needs; evenings may be involved in some regions.
- This role is not eligible for new Skilled Worker visas in accordance with current immigration rules.
Working Pattern and Additional Details
The position involves varied start times with some weekend duties and potential evening work. The assessment day (informal testing of abilities, behaviours and strengths) is typically held from 09:00 to 16:30, with morning experiences and afternoon interviews. Dress appropriately for the weather; refreshments are available on site. Details of the day, start times and required items will be shared after completion of the initial online stage. Vetting processes may take up to 12 weeks after an offer is made and accepted. Staff may work alongside volunteers or partner organisations. The role may require driving and occasional weekend commitments to meet operational needs.
