The Legal Aid Agency (LAA) is responsible for operationally administering the legal aid fund to provide criminal and civil legal aid advice to people in England and Wales. Our people are at the heart of achieving excellence.
Job Summary: The Technical Lead role assists a specific team through taking ownership of key work strands, acting as the lead technical expert in relation to the key work areas and developing caseworker and senior caseworker skills. The job holder will play a significant role in building the capability of caseworkers and senior caseworkers, providing both internal and external training and support to both caseworkers and providers through the provision of training and guidance materials.
Key Responsibilities:
- Act as technical lead in key workstreams providing ongoing support and guidance in areas of expertise.
- Lead on major change programmes, representing the Directorate in strategic change areas for the Legal Aid Agency.
- Lead on the continuous improvement of technical processes and procedures in response to feedback from a variety of sources.
- Maintain an up to date understanding of current guidance and regulations relating to payments and claims for criminal legal aid.
- Deal with complex enquiries which have been escalated, providing accurate and timely responses to correspondence and telephone calls received from internal and external stakeholders.
- Develop and own training materials and standard operating procedures for internal and external stakeholders.
- Communicate effectively on changes in guidance and procedures including unpopular messages.
- Engage and influence line managers to gain buy in on key messages.
- Work collaboratively with departments outside of case management to achieve key objectives.
- Lead on delivering training and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
- Lead on all Quality Control and consistency processes across all key billing work categories.
- Represent Crime Case Management on key MoJ/LAA projects at external events.
- Support stakeholder engagement with internal and external stakeholders to support the delivery of a consistent and high quality service.
Essential Knowledge, Experience and Skills:
- Knowledge of criminal legal aid billing regulations, guidance and operational work processes.
- Ability to interpret and apply guidance and regulations and make effective decisions based on risk and impact.
- Proven time management skills with ability to work at pace and prioritise tasks with minimal supervision.
- Exceptional communication skills.
- Proven training and mentoring experience.
Desirable Knowledge, Experience and Skills:
- Proven analytical and numerical skills.
- Involvement in project work.
- IT Literate with experience of using word, excel and other windows based applications.
