Job Overview

The role provides supervision, knowledge and skills to prisoners in non‑specialist workshops where qualifications are not delivered. The holder is not responsible for training prisoners up to qualification levels, and must maintain a structured, disciplined working environment that mirrors outside employment.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in selection process of prisoners for the workshop.
  • Induct prisoners and train them in health & safety, COSHH, machinery and tools usage.
  • Ensure all tools, equipment and raw materials are safe, secure and properly accounted for.
  • Provide support to prisoners as required and tailor learning to individual needs.
  • Set work schedules, manage targets and quality standards, and maintain contractual delivery.
  • Supervise, manage and control prisoners safely and securely, responsible for performance, motivation, discipline, appraisal and development.
  • Conduct metal‑detector scans or rub‑down searches of prisoners attending and leaving workshops.
  • Initiate product‑development reviews to maintain output levels and provide variety for prisoners.
  • Contribute to risk and health‑and‑safety assessments on consumables and the workshop area.
  • Actively contribute to prisoner reports, parole and sentence planning, ACCT and SIRs.
  • Open and complete ACCT forms, VRIRs and SIRs when required, and contribute to IEP reports.
  • Maintain regular radio‑net communication in accordance with the Local Security Strategy.
  • Request materials, estimate usage and meet work targets while ensuring quality assurance against product specification.
  • Log attendance and approve prisoner hours worked and wages, recording piece‑work where appropriate.
  • Attend and contribute to relevant meetings as required.
  • Provide administrative support for workshop activities.
  • Prepare documentation for managers for verification and quality checking.
  • Maintain and update systems in line with local agreements.

Working Conditions

The MoJ offers informal hybrid working arrangements where business needs allow, allowing work from the base location, MoJ sites or from home (only in the UK). Standard full‑time work is 37 hours per week; part‑time, flexible and job‑sharing patterns are considered. The position may involve supervised visitations of specialist workshops on an exceptional short‑term basis (1–5 days).

Eligibility & Security

All candidates are subject to security and identity checks prior to taking up the post. External candidates must complete a 6‑month probationary period; internal candidates are subject to probation if they have not already served within HMPPS. The role requires a standard DBS check.
