Overview
The job holder will work with colleagues to ensure the delivery of PSI 05/2016 Faith and Pastoral Care for Prisoners or its successor policy framework and the broader work of chaplaincy. This is a non‑rotational, non‑operational position with no line management responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Provide guidance on faith/belief system and advise, pastoral care and spiritual welfare to prisoners, staff and families.
- Plan and lead worship, meditation, prayer and faith/belief specific meetings, ensuring chaplaincy care is available at all times.
- Facilitate and deliver worship, meditation, study and religious programmes, working collaboratively with other chaplains, the Managing Chaplain, volunteers and external groups.
- Contribute to development of local policy, procedures and practice.
- Provide pastoral care to prisoners and support resolution of crisis situations, and mentor and support other chaplains and volunteers.
- Nurture chaplaincy volunteers.
- Work with the Official Prison Visitor (OPV) Liaison Officer to promote the scheme within the prison and assist OPV volunteers.
- Ensure the prison community is aware of relevant faith/belief events and coordinate establishment support; acquire and distribute appropriate faith literature and materials.
- Contribute to training programmes and materials for staff and volunteers, including Faith Awareness Training.
- Represent the chaplaincy team at establishment meetings, committees and as required in the absence of the Managing Chaplain.
- Actively support the Assessment, Care in Custody and Teamwork (ACCT) process.
- Attend relevant boards and meetings and contribute as chair or team member.
- With agreement of the Managing Chaplain and senior management, take on additional roles such as Family Liaison Officer or volunteer coordinator.
- Proactively forge links with local faith/belief communities and agencies to support prisoners on release.
- Participate in developing improvement plans and ensure administration, data collection and analysis of relevant targets is completed.
- Assist in Probation Approved Premises (APs), supporting offenders on release into the community, those serving community sentences or other HMPPS funded initiatives.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Chaplain must meet faith/belief eligibility requirements for their chosen faith/belief as outlined within the Group Profile.
- Hold a recognised qualification in Islamic Studies at Alimiyyah/graduate level or equivalent, and demonstrate in‑depth knowledge of Islam.
- Be proficient in Tajweed and have knowledge of different schools of thought and denominations within Islam.
- Formal endorsement by the candidate’s faith community through the HMPPS Muslim Faith and Belief Adviser is required before appointment.
- Strong communication skills in English and, where specified in Wales, Welsh.
- Ability to fulfil spoken and written aspects of the role with confidence.
