Responsibilities
- Lead or co‑lead one or more law reform projects against agreed timetables, including day‑to‑day and strategic management.
- Research the law and its application in practice (England, Wales, UK, overseas).
- Analyse legal problems, identify reform options and test potential solutions.
- Engage with stakeholders inside and outside Government.
- Write consultation papers, reports and other documents in collaboration with the Commissioner, the Team Head and other team members, and prepare them for publication.
- Analyse consultation responses.
- Work with other professionals within the Law Commission – for example, Head of Legal, Head of Communications, Economic Adviser, Parliamentary Counsel – to organise publicity, analyse impact, and draft legislation.
- Assist with promotion and implementation of recommendations from completed projects, including working as part of a Bill Team where appropriate.
- Manage one or more Research Assistants.
- Contribute to the corporate culture through supporting and leading activities on learning, development, wellbeing, diversity, inclusion, and recruitment.
Qualifications
- Academic: Minimum 2.1 undergraduate degree in any subject (or equivalent overseas qualification). Lower class can be considered with relevant experience.
- Professional: Qualified as a solicitor or barrister in England and Wales, or possess a comparable level of legal ability such as a legal academic, CILEX lawyer, overseas professionally qualified lawyer, or legal policy expert.
Experience
- Demonstrable knowledge and experience of public and administrative law.
- Experience of the interaction between public law and technology.
- Track record of acquiring knowledge of complex areas of law quickly.
- Complex legal analysis and/or advising experience.
- Experience drafting documents for publication or legal argument.
- Experience in law reform – analysing current law, researching alternatives, and communicating proposals.
- Experience of line management or supervising others.
