Responsibilities
- Prison officers protect the public and support prisoners' rehabilitation.
- Maintaining security and order within the prison environment.
- Providing support and guidance to prisoners, including counselling and teaching roles.
- Working as part of a team to ensure safety for staff and visitors.
- Covering various shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays.
Requirements
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Meet the Civil Service nationality requirements.
- Pass a medical and fitness assessment, including an eyesight test, hearing test and basic health screening.
- Meet the required eyesight standard in both eyes, with and without corrective lenses.
- Have suitable hearing (without the use of hearing aids).
- Maintain an appropriate standard of hearing and not have offensive or intimidating visible tattoos. Facial tattoos are generally not acceptable except for cultural, religious, or medical reasons.
- For high-security (category A) prisons, have lived in the UK for the last 3 years.
- Be legally eligible to live and work in the UK and in the Civil Service.

Nationality requirements
- Nationals of the Republic of Ireland.
- Nationals of Commonwealth countries who have the right to work in the UK.

- Individuals with limited leave to remain or indefinite leave to remain who were eligible for EUSS on or before 31 December 2020.
- Turkish nationals and certain family members of Turkish nationals who have accrued the right to work in the Civil Service.
Pay and Benefits
The initial training is 37 hours a week. After training you may work 37, 39 or 41 hours a week. Your annual salary will reflect your weekly hours.
- 37 hours a week: £33,746 per year.
- 39 hours a week: £35,875 per year.
- 41 hours a week: £38,003 per year.
